Traffic on the western portion of Route 78 was snarled most of yesterday as a result of two truck accidents almost directly across from each other at Exit 7 in Bloomsbury.
State Police said no injuries were reported, but travel was a nightmare for motorists across Hunterdon County and into southern Warren County and Pennsylvania, with backups stretching for more than 10 miles in each direction.

The chaotic scene included 40,000 pounds of hot dogs spilled across the eastbound lanes and into the median. But they were just another torture for hungry drivers stuck in the massive jams: Health officials promptly condemned the frankfurters.

The headaches began even be fore many commuters were on the road when an eastbound tractor- trailer driven by Wardell Goree Jr., 58, of Shannon, Miss., went off the highway "for an unknown reason," according to an initial State Police report.

Goree's truck climbed part way up the embankment, then "broke apart in a corkscrew fashion," falling back onto the highway and spilling its payload of hot dogs.

The truck's fuel tanks also ruptured, sending 110 gallons of diesel fuel across the road. While cleanup crews coped with that spill, health officials condemned the hot dogs.
