New Century Transportation, Inc., a trucking company in Westampton, told its nearly 1,500 workers Monday the business had filed for bankruptcy and closed its doors.

Stunned drivers and workers milled around the New Century parking lot Monday morning, talking and smoking cigarettes.

Some said they received letters from New Century about the closure, others heard the news after pulling their big rigs into the Rancocas Park East industrial site that houses the trucking firm.

A woman who answered the phone at New Century said, "I can't talk about (the closure). And there's no one here so I wouldn't know where to direct you.

"I knew this was coming last week," said Bert Williams, a driver from North Carolina. "I saw on the Better Business Bureau website that our rating had been pulled. I knew something was up."

New Century, launched in 2000, specialized in the less-than-truckload or LTL model in which several smaller deliveries for different customers are transported on one truck.

The company had a fleet of nearly 2,000 trucks, according to its website.
