Old Trucks From The Past

Those "Flatface" Fords had the aerodynamics of a billboard. The maintenance director at that time, Jim May, who was ahead of his time recognized the "gap' between the top of the cab & the trailer was creating a drag. He had a wedge shaped wing put on top of several of the Fords & compared fuel mileage. This was the first cab fairing in the industry I know of.

Let's go back.

Way back.

Fageol.

A 1976 Kenworth W900, former Werner rig. The current owners run for my company. The truck has over 5 million miles on it.

Also note the custom sleeper, one of the early "Big House" setups.

Some time back the current owner decided the truck needed modern electronic controlled power, so he wedged a Cummins Red Top into it. Everyone said it couldn't be done, that it wouldn't fit. He had to raise the hood mount a few inches and move it forward an inch or so to clear the cooling package and allow for the engine cooling fan.

But it all fits, and the truck has plenty of torque.

Note the aluminum frame, and custom fabricated air to air piping and cooling plumbing.
