PUTNAM -- In a dramatic roadside rescue, paramedics and volunteer firefighters freed a trucker from his rig following a three-vehicle crash on Highway 401 yesterday morning.

Though the collision left the mangled rig entangled with an SUV in a ditch, sparking an hour-long rescue effort, trucker Amar Gosal escaped without life-threatening injuries.

Emergency crews, including London-Middlesex EMS and OPP officers, were called to the crash in Highway 401's west lanes, just west of the Putnam exit, about 9:30 a.m. yesterday.

In what investigators described as a "chain-reaction collision," the truck crashed with two SUVs, one of which hurtled alone into the south ditch.
