FMCSA shuts down hotshot carrier for various hazmat violations

https://www.ccjdigital.com/fmcsa-sh...a3c973&utm_term=newsletter-2-daily-position-3

"...Police found that the truck was transporting numerous cases of Class 1 explosives, including ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixture; electric detonators; blasting caps and detonating cord. It is illegal to transport detonators on the same vehicle as explosives unless the detonators are packed in a U.S. DOT-specification container.

According to FMCSA, the explosives were piled in the truck bed next to metal objects, including pipes, buckets and work tools, and inside a bent metal toolbox. The detonators and detonating cord were in the cab of the pickup and improperly packaged in a cardboard box.

Additionally, the company had not prepared hazmat shipping papers, had not placed hazmat placards on the truck and had not prepared emergency response information to be used in the mitigation of a hazmat incident – all of which are violations of hazmat regulations. The truck’s driver also did not possess a CDL, a hazmat endorsement or a medical certificate."

:duh::nono h4h::regretful:
What is wrong with these idiots? The driver and anyone associated with the loading and transportation of this load should be thrown in prison for negligence and reckless endangerment. Anyone who thought this was okay needs to be far, far away from the transportation of anything on public roads.

You got that right,Red. With the droves of people out there that look like they came from an episode of Shipping Wars, running a duel wheel pickup, and a goose neck trailer, I am sure they are running by the letter of the law....
Well...you may be one of them BRG. Donna and I were going over the numbers and these boardwalk and low bridge incidences are killing our bottom line. So from now on, Coop Dispatch is now going full time hotshot operation with low deck flatbeds that can clear most bridges in the country. These will be 550/5500 series trucks. Let Wong know they will be turned up to 75mph.

75mph? there goes my fuel mileage bonus!

So they will go 15percent faster?
Clear bridges,15 percent lower?
Be boardwalk legal?

The driver from Werner said he could only take his family on the vacation because of the tax benefit given to him? That says enough about Werner’s pay,and why their turnover rate is high......

This is why driving OTR is a miserable existence, and I don't know how anyone does it. The pay is nothing, no benefits, no retirement, and you spend three quarters or more of your life in the cab, wandering from place to place. This Werner driver is probably lucky if he's home with his family more than once a month.

Core Group of Distracted Drivers Reduces Road Safety

http://www.ttnews.com/articles/core...pOXRnbzlZb01kUGgrck1EcTdCcEtGRlFncVdZY0dycyJ9

Interesting read, but THIS was news to me:

"The rising use of phones by truck drivers led FMCSA in 2012 to enact stricter penalties for professional drivers covering cellphone use while driving, including holding, texting, dialing and reaching for the device.

Last year, the civil penalties for these violations rose to a maximum of $14,739 for motor carriers and $3,685 for a driver."

FMCSA Assigns CSA Severity Weights to ELD Violations

http://www.ttnews.com/articles/fmcs...XMTRSeUNsaTZpRFFlRGxhMDRwblFFQkM1cGpDaUU2In0=

A complete list of ALL violations and their severity weights is available in the SMS Appendix A spreadsheet.

http://bit.ly/SMSAppendixA

The above DOWNLOAD shows all violations and their severity weights (POINTS). Not just ELD related. Worth looking at if you ever feel compelled to let violations slide, as "not that big of a deal. Run it at YOUR OWN RISK.

A couple of quick examples:

Vehicle Maint:
Most headlight/brake light violations: 6 points
Flat tire or audible leak: 8 points
Tire-Low air: 3 points

HazMat:

Package not secure in vehicle: 10 points

No placards/markings when required: 5 points

Placard does not meet specifications: 5 points

A wealth of info in the one download... Worth saving, IMHO

OOIDA says bill to open interstate trucking to younger drivers is unsafe

http://www.fleetowner.com/driver-ma...m=email&elq2=8bb3e020390d4546a18650ac6b43be07

"Among other statistics and concerns, the letter points out that intrastate CMV drivers under the age of 19 are four times more likely to be involved in fatal crashes, and CMV drivers who are 19-20 years of age are six times more likely to be involved in fatal crashes.

“We think it’s irresponsible to put young drivers behind the wheel of a truck in order to avoid addressing the real problems of high turnover,” said Todd Spencer, acting president of OOIDA. “The focus should instead be on fixing the staggering turnover rate with better pay and working conditions.”"
