FMCSA Assigns CSA Severity Weights to ELD Violations

http://www.ttnews.com/articles/fmcsa-assigns-csa-severity-weights-eld-violations?utm_source=express&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=newsletter&mkt_tok=eyJpIjoiTkRZNU56ZGlaRGMyWXpJMiIsInQiOiIraCtESEloTWZDMzlUXC8yaHdjcHNiUFl0anhvWUtMbmhwOW01b2FcL2xuRityV1U2RERkWVU5ZXBwRzhwdVhrNFNNalpMVHV2XC9GMFwvQnRWXC9nbUk5anorK042Tk96Q09hVUZXMTRSeUNsaTZpRFFlRGxhMDRwblFFQkM1cGpDaUU2In0=

A complete list of ALL violations and their severity weights is available in the SMS Appendix A spreadsheet.

http://bit.ly/SMSAppendixA

The above DOWNLOAD shows all violations and their severity weights (POINTS). Not just ELD related. Worth looking at if you ever feel compelled to let violations slide, as "not that big of a deal. Run it at YOUR OWN RISK.

A couple of quick examples:

Vehicle Maint:
Most headlight/brake light violations: 6 points
Flat tire or audible leak: 8 points
Tire-Low air: 3 points

HazMat:

Package not secure in vehicle: 10 points

No placards/markings when required: 5 points

Placard does not meet specifications: 5 points

A wealth of info in the one download... Worth saving, IMHO
Overweight on boardwalks.
50 points.
New Jersey and California only....

At a recent State TDC event, several OD guys had these custom tire knocker/5th wheel puller/multi use tools. Actually a pretty cool invention. Solid construction. Certainly worth sharing...

Congress again set to take up provision to protect carriers from court-ordered payouts to drivers

https://www.ccjdigital.com/congress...a3c973&utm_term=newsletter-2-daily-position-3

"The provision seeks to reassert the federal government’s role in managing drivers’ hours of service by preventing states from requiring carriers to comply with any state-level laws, such as those in California, that require employers to give employees paid meal and rest breaks. The Denham language instead exempts carriers from those laws, but it doesn’t forbid them from providing paid breaks if they choose.

The measure also seemingly restricts states from forcing carriers to pay drivers for non-driving tasks."

Where’s That Shipment? Shippers Demand Precise Load Tracking to Improve Supply Chain Operations

“It is taking data and using it in proactive execution and also making predictive accommodations,” Elenjickal said. “People are looking for real-time information because they can look at better labor management, dock management and just-in-time inventory.”

There are billions of data points that can be used to make predictions, better understand driver detention time and provide alerts, said Dan Cicerchi, vice president of load-tracking firm MacroPoint, which recently was acquired by Descartes Systems Group.

“There is a big appetite for data,” he said. “More shippers realize it is available, so then they want it.”

Carrier ordered out of service for “complete and utter lack of compliance” with FMCSA regulations

The FMCSA uncovered 4,802 hours of unidentified driving time resulting from 51 instances of drivers unplugging or disabling the recording mechanisms.

https://cdllife.com/2018/carrier-or...er-lack-of-compliance-with-fmcsa-regulations/

“A Georgia-based trucking company has been declared an imminent hazard to public safety by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration for a laundry list of offenses including illegally reincarnation, substance abuse screening violations, and failure to properly record and monitor their drivers’ record of duty status.”

I wonder if this company is associated in anyway with Coop dispatch...perhaps a southern division....

Fight to preserve state laws requiring driver pay for meals, rest time hits Hill again

http://www.dcvelocity.com/articles/...iver-pay-for-meals-rest-time-hits-hill-again/

"Opponents have said the language eliminates all driver compensation for work that does not involve actual driving, and it could effectively gut the states' future roles in dealing with these types of issues. The 1994 law deregulated states' economic authority over trucking, not their power to regulate labor matters, they said.

Supporters of the amendment, notably the American Trucking Associations (ATA), which represents the larger fleets, contend that it follows the intent of Congress in 1994 when it passed legislation that pre-empted the economic regulation of trucking that states had in place for decades."
