SHIPPENSBURG - A fatality and other crashes Monday on Interstate 81 left long lines of drivers at a standstill in blistering heat.

A tractor-trailer accident at mile marker 32 started the chain of accidents between Scotland and Shippensburg.

Pennsylvania State Police said Danielle N. Forney, 21, of Shippensburg was killed when she crashed her northbound 1995 Chevrolet Corsica into the rear of a 2000 Peterbilt tractor-trailer around 12:15 p.m.

Police said Philip A. Sharp of York was parked along the shoulder of the interstate with his flashers on while crews cleared an accident that had occurred earlier at mile marker 32.
Forney apparently did not brake before hitting the tractor-trailer, said police, who said they do not know why she didn't slow down.

The third accident, which involved four vehicles, occurred in Greene Township only an hour after crews reopened the northbound lanes.

Police said a Volvo tractor-trailer driven by Edward Schwenk Erb, 79, of Waynesboro was traveling north when it hit the back of a Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck at 3:23 p.m. near mile marker 22, causing the pickup to spin across the median strip.
