ABF | Pension Solution?

I do not think that people should depend on a pension to fund their retirement.I took a screwing with Con-Way and feel that you should not depend on a company controlled pension to be there when you need it.I am young enough that this will have little impact on my retirement.I"m sure everyone has heard the term "diversify",well same goes for making sure that you have a little money waiting on you at retirement.Don't put all your nest eggs in one basket, someone may drop it.There are lots of ways to invest your money, alittle or a lot at a time. Please don't depend on someone else to fund YOUR retirement. If the pension is there when you retire, well that is just a bonus. That's my .02 and probably cost more than it was worth.:smilie_132:

I have financed my own retirement for over 30 years. I have worked for two companies giving them a fair days pay for a fair days wages. During that time my contributions have been used to help pay the pensions of those that came before me. I hope that you younger guys will feel the same way I have about them.

They paved the way for me and I and millions more have done the same for others.

United we stand! Divided we will fall!

Take a look at RPM or Pse whatever you want to call it. We gave a inch and they want to take it all. It's time to look back and realize what we have to move forward to!

First, I think your crazy if you depend mainly on your pension alone. You need to supplement that with a 401k of your own or some kind of retirement investment.

With that said, we used to have a pension that was paid into our own accounts here in PA. I was never so happy knowing exactly what I had. Unfortunately, they changed back to the defined plan. Too bad we can't go back that way.

As for giving control of our retirement to the companies, I can't really believe anyone would want to go that way. What happens when they invest 75% of your money into their company, the stock takes a huge hit or worse the company goes under?

Who knows how or what they will invest in.Let me make my own investment choices and if I f@#% it up I have only me to blame.:smilie_132:

I don't understand, why should todays workers pay the retirees pensions? Shouldn't the money they paid in fund their own retirement? What am I missing?

It may well come to that some day in the not to distant future.:party-smiley-017:Hope everyone enjoys the rest of their holiday,I gotta go get started on some plumbing repair:(

I will do better for myself than depending on a socialist system to get through my Golden years.

You hope you will. When the big businesses in this country decide that they have complete control of all their employees they can dictate the stock market where you have been investing for your golden years and then I guess you'll see things from a different perspective.
Oh I forgot they already do.

so why don't we just take the NMFA and throw it in the garbage and just adopt all the non union practices so we can compete on an even ground

that would be what you are proposing
i'd rather ride my end out as it currently stands then to be a party to what you are proposing

it used to be the non unions were attempting to parity themselves with union work rules / pay to attract workers
now that they accomplished that the shoe is now on the other foot
union jobs are conceeding more and more with the union's permission in order to compete so what else do you want to give them?
don't be so much in a hurry to give up what i fought for, what my father fought for and what alot of union brothers and sisters fought for
after we give up everything we have then what's next "paycuts" "overtime" after 50 hours or even let's work saturdays for free
i respect your opinnion but bro let's keep it real
:butt kiss::toxic: :nutkick:
So you would rather break a company than try to keep them in buisness? at $39 or $40 a day they pay into your fund not to mention the health premiums of which they are paying I figure it costs these companies in the nieghborhood of $450 a week or $23400 a year to have the privilage of your working for them. All I am saying if it sures up the pension fund for those of you vested that's great and if it helps them be more competitive that's better. At least in a 401K you still have something.God only knows where your pension will be if ABF and YRC are not here in 5 to 10 years? My guess you will not have one.Don't expect your government to save you they'll run from this faster than a mexican from I.N.S.

"faster than a mexican from the I.N.S."That's too funny, except around here they don't run away, they often run to them.A person can build up a powerful thirst trying to get across the desert. It's not too bad for them now with all the rain, lots of puddles to drink from, but that all changes in the summer. It would boggle the mind to know how many people perish trying to cross this very desolate, dry and mountainous terrain where everything wants to bite or scratch you.The southwestern part of Texas is very treacherous to foot travelers.

Look new penn always beat everyone the most profitable ltl ever , paying the highest wage package, were does the money go if they dont spend it on you ! In thier pockets -silly !!! Don't you think they want every penny !!! The only one who goes broke is the chump who drives for 30 years and ends up with nothing.

Sounds like a company shill to me.:smilie_132:

No not a shill, just trying to be a little realistic I understand you all have fought hard to get what you have.I also understand the companies side as far as if you cannot compete you won't be around for long that is just simple economics..One question can you leave your pension benefits to your children?? I know you can your 401k money becuase it's your money.I love the idea of a company paid pension but I like my job more.

what?

Why would you leave your pension plan for your kids? If you are talking about Dependents, that is what life insurance is for. If you are talking about after retirement and you croak of old age,why would you expect your kids to be paid your pension. Are you sure you aren't in management?:realmad:

I Don"t No About Anyone Else But To Let Abf Be In Charge Of Anything We Would Have To Be Crazy. Over The Last 20 Years Of Being A City Driver And Being On Workers Comp A Couple Of Times And The First Thing Out Of Abf Is The Word (denied). Abf Does Not Like To Give Anything But A Hard Time. I Could Just See Abf Saying If You Want Your Retirement Get A Lawyer And Fight For It.abf Does Not Do Anything For Anybody But Themselfs

Right !!! They will squirm out of paying for anything if they don't have too !!!

Someones gonna steal our pensions anyway...if the company dont get them, the government will, if they dont get them the Union will bust us. After 15 years I have 0 faith in the company and the Union to do whats best for "us". I just see a lose lose situation....with "us" losing twice.:hide:
