Not since 2001 have we seen people reluctant to say they are proud to be american

Americans' likelihood of saying that they are "extremely proud" to be an American has returned to where it was in early 2001, before the 9/11 terrorist attacks. While slightly more than half of Americans are now extremely proud to be an American, more than nine in 10 are at least moderately proud. This suggests that patriotism is still very much alive in the U.S., even if the fervor is slightly less than it was after 9/11.

The reading of 54% in early June is about the same as the 55% recorded when Gallup first asked the question nearly 15 years ago, at the tail end of Bill Clinton's presidency. This indicates that patriotism is not necessarily a fixed characteristic, but can vary depending on circumstances -- most notably when the U.S. is under duress, as was the case after the events of 9/11 and the build-up to wars in Afghanistan and Iraq

I'm proud to be a an American, however as a middle aged, white, tax paying, Christian leaning, hetro, with the means to take care of myself and family without help from a bloated government and think if I can do it others should too, I am told or at least lead to believe I have nothing to be proud of and that by rights I am part of the problem.

Not surprised when you consider that since 2008 we have had a President telling us we should be ashamed to be American and apologetic for everything in our history.

For starters how about compulsory military service, lets get more Americans to have a little "skin in the game".

It's a sad statement when only 0.5% of 1% of the population is currently serving in the Armed Forces.

There seems to be more sick people out in public these days. Drug addict's, thugs, not taking care of themselves, or things they own/rent.

Better yet if you come out of a family mired in generational welfare, its the prefect way to break the cycle, learn skills, earn money, earn an education, receive healthcare, are there risks, yeah, same as the inner city, but weigh the benefits.

There were only a few. They've become pretty hard to find. Most of them are at work, while the others are available to answer polling questions.

And why not? It's a good way to learn a trade or skill. There are lots of advantages to joining the military, especially when you're financially challenged.

Or you can just hang out on the street corners looking for trouble while living off momma's Govt. freebies. Tough call.

You are right ,that is what I did when I graduated High school. The U.S. Army says 7 out of 10 young adults 17- 24 years old are ineligible for military service. What the Hell happened to this country.
