Four people were injured and a truck driver was charged with reckless driving after a van carrying prisoners struck a tractor-trailer going the wrong way down Interstate 40 in Hickman County near the Dickson County line early yesterday.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Yakov Melnick, age and address unavailable, was charged with reckless driving, being over the 11-hour rule and crossing the median, Oaks said. Menlick had been driving 13 1/2 hours, Oaks said.

According to Oaks, Melnick got on the interstate going the wrong way at the 163-mile marker in Dickson County. He drove about four miles to the 159-mile marker before realizing he was going the wrong way, officials said.

“He tried to turn around in the median and got stuck. That’s when the Con Link prisoner van struck the tractor-trailer,” Oaks said.
