Truck Driver Hospitalized After Fiery Crash

FedEx Truck, Second Truck Collide In South Suburb

EAST HAZEL CREST, Ill. Two trucks crashed on the Tri-State Tollway in the south suburbs overnight, leaving one person hospitalized.

A FedEx truck and another semi collided around 10:40 p.m. on the tollway near Halsted Street in East Hazel Crest, police said.

The trucks were both headed north on the tollway when the first slowed because of a traffic backup ahead, police said.
The second truck, driven by 67-year-old Charles Harding of Cassopolis, Mich., did not slow and struck the truck ahead of it, police said.

Harding attempted to swerve to avoid the accident, but his truck struck the cab of the truck ahead of it and caught fire. The trailer of the truck Harding was driving was completely engulfed in flames, police said.

Harding was on fire was taken to Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey with minor injuries, police said.

He was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
