Incumbent Republican South Carolina Rep. Mark Sanford, a frequent Trump critic who the president lambasted earlier in the day as "nothing but trouble" and "not very unhelpful," was ousted in Tuesday night's primary by state Rep. Katie Arrington.

On a key primary night with elections also held in Maine, Virginia, Nevada and North Dakota, the results in South Carolina were an unmistakably positive referendum on President Trump's tenure.

Arrington's shock win was also a dramatic rebuke of Sanford's heated "Never Trump"-style rhetoric. It signaled that the president's base in the state remains solidly behind him ahead of November's midterm elections, despite withering criticism from both inside and outside the Republican party.

Republicans need to understand Trump supporters are behind his policies and his efforts not the “R” by his name, unlike the democrats if there’s a “D”

The American people, on the GOP side, are sending a message to the RINOs within the party. Either you back our President, or your political career will be hitting a dead end. We are tired of you backstabbing our President.

Sanford got what he deserved. If you can't back the President that we elected, you have no business being in the Republican party.
    Bye-Bye.

Sanford was One of the BEST, voting wise. 93% CR rating. About the only thing he disagrees with Trump are tariffs.

What sunk him was his looney leaving office for his South American lover. Until then he was on course to be President.

Most had voted before the Trump tweet. The tweet was uncalled for and out of line, imo. Sanford would've lost anyway, probably...

There is an entire group of Republicans that have an excellent voting record for Conservative issues, but then Trump came along, and several of them have coward to the pressure and turned against Trump. Most of their votes that got them that high Conservative rating were long before Trump came along. I guarantee you that several of them would have a lower ranking had Trump been in office for the past 5 years because they don't support him.

the only thing he disagreed with are tariffs, the Omnibus bill, and amnesty, if I remember right. All things you and I agree with Sanford on. Democrat Donald has governed well, but he is NOT a Conservative, by a long shot....

Same situation for Sanford as Rokita, here in Indiana. Trump backed Braun to oppose Donnelly instead of Rokita. Turns out, Braun makes the Dem Donnelly look ultra Conservative. Braun voted to raise Indiana taxes 45 times. And the Dems are making commercials that show Braun as a slave master employing workers at minimum wage with no overtime.

Pending on how the Trump backed primary winners accross the country fare in the general election, I think it's possible we could be looking at a major shift in the Republican Party. To be clear, I backed Cruz in the 2016 primaries, but since DJT has been POTUS, he's done a lot of conservative things that GOP establishment has had many chances in the past to do, but has failed to act. Neither party's leadership has actually taken the time to understand the typical Trump voter, many of whom are just common everyday working folks like ourselves who have conservatives values and traditional morals. This failure on the part of the establishment to understand the Trump voter could lead to the demise of the Republican Party as we know it, similar to the demise of the Whigs with the election of Republican candidates and President Lincoln. What this new Republican Party would look like remains to be seen, but I believe that sun may be setting on the GOP as we've all come to know it in the past.

If he was, he wouldn’t have lied. If he was, he wouldn’t try and destroy partnerships with allies and then throw props to brutal murdering dictators. Trump is NOT looking out for the best interests of Americans.
