I just came back from north dakota. I work on the west coast and have till.aug 3rd. Its crazy in nd . I applied with a company called power fuels. actually I got the job if I want it so we up checked it out. a few of us other vitran drivers are up there.

Here in Ohio they are advertising those oil field jobs starting at $18-$19/hr.

I decided not to go when I thought it would pay $80,000 the first year. $19 an hour is nothing when you account for expenses and living conditions. Or maybe you can work 70 hours a week and double time after 40.

I am not down with me and two other dudes living a small company owned mobile home.

The ads don't say if they pay overtime. But I know there is an oilfield exemption to the 14 hour rule. That's a lot of a person's life to give up for employment. I would rather work to live, not live to work.

There are youtube videos of workers up there. One guy said he drives a truck 100 hours a week. He works 7 days a week for 3 or 4 weeks then gets 10 days off. I would think you would get burned out pretty quickly. He said it pays $25 an hour and when he rattled off the math for his pay, there wasn't any over time pay. Many people live in man camps. There apparently is a waiting list for a real pace to stay. Good Luck!

the only ones i have heard this works out for is 1) those that already live there 2) those with no family commitments

I watched most of it in TOL Friday night while waiting. Talked about lower claims costs, ect. CK also referred to service center regional pay scale. Supposedly to recruit and retain employees. Talked about teered pay scales. Took it to mean wage progression, to be announced during 2nd quarter to be effective in 3rd. qtr. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but did we not hear the same statement in a video about this time last year?? Gives personnel the hope of better wages, keeps employees in place during the summer vacation season and past the hiring binges of other employeers. Is this just a repeat of old broken promises or is it just another stall tactic? We should hope not, but I'm still a little leary. Also talked of training for Sales Rep's,hand-held scanners and the closing of the West Coast.

lower claim costs = they're not paying claims. tiered wages: 1-2 yrs $18.00, 2-4 yrs $18.50, 4 yrs+ $19.00. lmfao. basically lowered claim costs is the combo of less freight and not paying on claims. the tiered wage system will prob set up to take from the senior drivers and disperse it to the newbies. undoubtely they crunched the numbers so it won't actually dip into the companies funds at all. example: if you take $1.00 an hour from a senior employee, that could be a quarter raise for 4 people. keylon must be a socialist. lol.

I recall hearing a video by Christ Keylon last year around this time saying that he would get back to us on raises. I have to say this is the first i have heard of a wage freezes ending and a pay package being put out. There still a lot of unanswered question though. How does someone progress on the pay scale who has worker here five years for the same pay? Will that driver still have to wait four more years to top out? Will a new hire have to wait 6-8 years? Will top payed drivers see any raise or as above mentioned lose pay?

I am hopeful because I have no desire to leave and start over, but I am ready to and persuing it. My hope is Vitran can convince me to stay before I find what I will leave for.

I may be wrong but I do not think Vitran is interested enough in the workers to make us content. I believe the money has always been there and we know for a fact it is now. So, Mr. Keylon, this is your one and only shot to tell us what you think about us. What will it be?

luci,

You say "the money has always been there and we know for a fact it is now." Seriously, where have you been and what have you been reading? The money, 35 million ( soon to be around 20 million) is not ours, it is in Canada. Canada is not going to let us **** away the remaining cash. We are still losing $250,000 per day, that is right, per day.

There has been money to over pay ffor several trucki g companies to add to the vitran system. There was enough money to entice all these high ranking fed ex folks, and con-way executive. Money has always been there to do these things.

As far as losing all the money we are here is how I think it has to be fixed: fix our OSD, and delivery time problems. The only way to fix our service issues is to invest in those providi g the service.

Vitran has spent money like a sailor on leave for some time while telling labor how broke vitran is. I look at the actions of vitran ot what they say. If
You all wa t to keep drinking the vitran kool aid thats your business.

Yep...just another song and dance folks!

guess well see who's correct here in the near future. taking loans out, selling a profitable division and closing terminals sounds like they're doing really good to me.

We will never get the truth about what they have or don't have. We get what they feed us and nothing more. We are this little fish in this giant pond and we have all these other big fish swimming around try to eat us. i.e........FedX ....OD....Southeastern....R&L.....Estes>>>Conway>>>UPSF>>>We are in the fight of our life.....My suggestion at this point in the game is just hold on for awhile and try not to get caught up in what we have or don't have. Who cares as long as your check clears the bank. We all have free will, we can leave anytime if we think we are getting a raw deal. When the dust settles lets see who left standing. If we are standing maybe they will do the right thing and give us a little more money. Maybe not. But until it all plays out I wouldn't concern myself with the financial end. You would only be speculating. Go on ABF's forum and look what they are trying to shove down their throats. We will know what management wants us to know, and nothing more.

The correct pecking order in any business is: 1. The Customer. 2.The Employee. 3. The Shareholder. If you have compentent, capable, responsible somewhat content employees taking care of #1, #3 will be happy. If #2 doesn't take care of #1, you won't have or need #3. Most companies today seem to get the pecking order azz backward.

Yeah I'm out here. I'm tired of all the crap. Gonna go work for a company that actually makes money and might actually care about their employees.
