A crash on Interstate 95 late Monday night in Hanover claimed the life of a still unidentified truck driver.

According to Sgt. Kevin Barrick with the Virginia State Police, the three-vehicle accident occurred at 11:50 p.m. at the 87-mile marker, just north of Sliding Hill Road.

The first vehicle, a 2003 Peterbuilt loaded with fuel, had stopped. Behind it, a 2006 Freightliner tractor-trailer carrying steel beams had also stopped. But the third truck, a 2006 Volvo tractor-trailer, did not stop.

"The driver [of the Volvo] was going about 60 mph when he rammed into the second truck," Barrick said. "It hit the Freightliner, which slammed into the Peterbuilt."

The drivers of the first and second trucks, Mary Elizabeth Squires of New Kent and James Tyler Thorne of Crewe, respectively, were able to escape the accident and ensuing fire with no injuries.

The driver of the third truck probably died on impact, Barrick said.
