Bureaucracy and pricey campus amenities push up costs, former Labor secretary Robert Reich says.

For Reich, part of the problem stems from schools spending money on unnecessary campus amenities to attract students – building student unions and athletic facilities that “resemble country clubs.”

    [READ: Schools Offer Gee-Whiz Gyms]

“These amenities are extremely expensive and contribute to the escalating cost of college,” he says. “Moreover, they have very little or anything to do with the education of most young people.”

David Kociemba, an adjunct professor at Emerson College and chair of AAUP’s Committee for Contingency and the Profession – a committee that provides advocacy and resources for contingent faculty – agrees and points to how colleges market themselves to perspective students.

“Colleges are trying to showcase their value through visuals like dining halls, palatial new buildings and the ubiquitous rock-climbing walls, not the quality of their professors and programs,” he says. “A university’s primary product is delivering an education, and [colleges] don’t even devote half of their resources to the classroom. Instead, [resources] are directed toward transforming schools into the most expensive summer camp ever.”

College cost so much because the govt will give you as much money as you need on a signature

Need 10% more because tuition went up, no problems just add it to the total

Also, professors making $150K a year teaching 2 classes a week (great work if you can get it, heck in some fields a graduate assistant teaches)

Big Ed is Big Business, but it is one we don't want to talk about because it is dominated by libs

Who would want to go through all the work earning a Doctorate degree to teach & research then get paid truck driver wages?
Why do we not respect education?

It really is a bigger racket than oil. At least the price of gasoline drops sometimes and it moves your car.

we took my son on a visit to High Point
    unreal

when I went back to get my masters, I had to take a sociology class
Saw the professor once, the class was taught by his graduate students
I was paying for a professor instead I got two hippie girls that were 15 years younger than me who knew nothing about sociology.
what kind of wage should a person be paid with a Doctorate in 17th Century French Poetry, or Womans Studys or any of the other slue of crap degrees these universities are pumping out.
Just because you got a piece of paper, does not make you smart , a lot of the time it means you just hung out for a while

Not many openings in the University for French Poetry professors, a big University may have one that has to also teach some other classes.
So unless you loved it then you wouldn't major in it.

Now what all Education does is expose the student to all sorts of fields they never knew before. That's the General education requirements and it makes a more well rounded person.
The professors not teaching the class i think you're right they should be there at least most of the time. I had TA's teach some of my classes and since I have some sort of hearing problem often people with accents I can't hear correctly.

but it is a major and people pay hundreds of dollars per credit hour to take these classes
for a degree that is for all intents and purposes, worthless
then these idiot kids, who cant find a job with their worthless degree cry about having to pay for it
    The Dems solution

make college free so we can have more over educated people running around that don't know how to do anything except recite Desnos

Some children need to know when you want to do something you really, really love, that costs alot to do, and by doing it you would have a very slim chance of making a living doing it, it's called a hobby, not worthy of a degree, so French poetry-golf, same same.

why does the left want no one to be responsible for anything?
why does the left not to hold be accountable for themselves?
why does the left feel that it is everyone elses responsibility to support everyone else?

we don't need to spend tens of thousands of dollars so people can get worthless degrees

get the govt out of Big Ed and the prices will come down the free market will force it to do so

The university's top priority is their own bottom line. That's the real problem. They've become a business more than an institution for higher learning. Couple that with Liberal indoctrination and they've become complete failures.

Yep. The cost of a college education has probably never gone down. And quite often, it's a 5-10% hike on tuition each year.
