Yellow | XPO closes purchase of con-way layoffs begin

As i have read in the XPO/Conway site on TB.These drivers and dock workers are in the dark to whereabouts their company is going. Some of these drivers have been at home for 4 or 5 days. Some are hearing that XPO will be picking up some sort of freight from FedEx.Hoping and wishing. Not good
I think you may be hoping and wishing someone would believe you. Even your wheel seal story was better than this.....

Sugarfoot, We had a national account that we primarily handled the Northeast corridor freight. There was a lot of business being given to YRC but we lost the account due to pricing. When the sales rep tried to go back in and renegotiate the pricing to get the freight back. The shipper said all their freight is being handled by a 3pl now and they just go with the lowest priced carrier. Damn the service for freight it gets there when it gets there now.

Talked to the sales rep about trying to offer any type of niche service to get some business and he told me something I never heard before ever in trucking. Bad enough there is 3pl (3rd party logistics), but he said this shipper now does business with a 4pl company to move its freight. Said we that we'll never be competitive with other carriers unless we offer a good lane for the price they're asking from here which usually going to the left coast.
fourth party logistics (4PL)

Definition
Arrangement in which a firm contracts out (outsources) its logistical operations to two or more specialist firms (the third party logistics) and hires another specialist firm (the fourth party) to coordinate the activities of the third parties.

Wow, how in the world do you understand, let alone compete with that ?
So is this what XPO was all about until the Conway acquisition, now they have their own LTL fleet to do cheap work with ?

Yeah a sales rep is catching hell out there in this new world trying to secure new business. It is almost like reverse prostitution now in the freight industry for the lowest price you'll get to service the freight:nono h4h:

Don't know if anyone said this already but Conway as it was known never had twin screw tractors in their fleet. In the city operations they never had a man pull a 53' trailer but they would have three guyz peddling freight in one area with pups. I used to kid their drivers for being pup jockey's cause you would rarely see them pulling a big box. All that is going to change for them now.

Where I'm at, YRC & XPO are only divided by a fence line. This part of XPO is the container side of the house they have all owner operators working out of that yard. Haven't seen much changing except it looks like they are requiring all the trucks to be painted white.

A good part of this cheap for hire trucking can be blamed on the creation of the dreaded independent contractor status, influx of foreigner owned companies employing foreign drivers who are slipping under DOT laws by not playing by the same rules as US drivers, NAFTA, deregulation , lease purchase programs that in part force drivers to stay out to earn enough to make truck payments, regardless of what some of the loads pay, and yes, even our favorite PTS carrier(CRST) and others who suck people into their driving schools and pay many of them barely minimum wages for 3 years until they pay off tuition. The companies paying good wages have to compete against all this....

Isn't this what conservative politics is all about, the free market??? Get people to work for free and you have a market, or a market share at an advantage.

IMO to make this whole thing work you still have to have drivers that will work for very low wages and benefits, that way there is enough money that everyone can take their share and make this work. There are only so many drivers that will work for cheap out there, so unless they can talk the guys at Conway into working for reduced wages this whole house of cards could end up landing on the floor, if you know what I mean.

There are plenty of drivers out there who buy/lease a truck and then try to make a living running loads for $1.60 mile (zip to zip) rates it's been going on since I had trucks in the late 70's early 80s they run out of them yet.......................................

I like the fact that the 2 biggest scab supporters liked your post, LMFAO.

One of whom, always gives reasons why he deserves his Teamster pension, while now working non union. :lmao:
I hadn't posted, or even visited, this forum for a while.

Just for your info tho:

CSPF rates me Vested, Active. I followed the rules. I earned my pension, same as anyone.

On Truckingboards Seniority, of all the thousands of members- only KK and Jeff have been here longer. (Early 99; Jeff didn't own the boards yet) I've earned the right to post on this forum. And, unlike you, I've not been discourteous to Jeff rules and ended up repeatedly banned.

Carry on....

This is the weak point. Drivers will not work like this for long. This is why you have a Driver shortage in this country and it is only going to get worst. You can set up a system with 3PL/4PL & independent contractors all you want but if you don't wanna pay then WA-LA! People take their CDL's and go home!
What is it now anyway? 50,000 Drivers short in this country now? Projected to go well above 100,000?
The "Free Market" works both ways!

i really don't buy this driver shortage thing, I think it's a sham to get the driver market flooded with drivers so that drivers will work for cheaper wages to just have a job!

Driver shortage in truck load market.High turnover rate.Just post your resume on the internet and you'll see everyone recruiter will call you.,but jobs don't pay crap because freight doesn't pay either.

I see s pay cut coming for Con Job on the horizon.
I wonder if it won't be more of a restructuring of the way they are paid, some creative way that if a guy bust his ass for sixty or seventy hours a week you can actually make a bunch of money. Less jobs that pay by the hour and more miles and stops type pay?

I forget when I first started posting on Truckingboards. There were no forums, just a long list of posts and replies.
