YRC reverses comments that upset Teamsters
By RANDOLH HEASTER
The Kansas City Star

YRC Worldwide chairman Bill Zollars apologized to the company’s Teamsters employees, saying the trucking giant’s nonunion workers will take as much or more in salary cuts as the union workforce.

Zollars’ recent comments that YRC’s nonunion workforce probably won’t take further compensation cuts angered many union workers, who are being asked to take an additional 5 percent pay cut after accepting a 10 percent reduction earlier this year. In addition, YRC wants to suspend monthly payments into Teamsters pension funds through the end of 2010.

YRC chief apologizes to Teamsters

zollarsYRC Worldwide chairman Bill Zollars apologized to the company's Teamsters employees, saying the trucking giant's nonunion workers will take as much or more in salary cuts as the union workforce.

Zollars' recent comments that YRC's nonunion workforce probably won't take further compensation cuts angered many union workers, who are being asked to take an additional 5 percent pay cut after accepting a 10 percent reduction earlier this year. In addition, YRC is seeking to suspend monthly payments into Teamsters pension funds through the end of 2010, which would save the company several hundred milion dollars.

"YRCW is committed to the principle of 'shared sacrifice' and will require that our nonunion employees take as much, if not more, cuts in wages and benefits as provided by our union employees in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which has been submitted for membership ratification," Zollars wrote in a letter to Teamsters president Jim Hoffa Tuesday. "The companies' financial books and records will be made avialable as required by the MOU to verify that nonunion employees have provided equal sacrifice."

Also, Zollars said YRC will not be subcontracting work to a nonunion delivery firm that YRC announced would be part of its residential services program announced Tuesday.

What impact Zollars' comments will ultimately have on the ratification of the union concessions remains to be seen. The vote was expected to be close before this development.

"This is just one more thing out there that gets all the employees riled up," said David Ross, analyst with Stifel Nicolaus. "I don't know if it'll affect the outcome of vote, but it shows the company is not being mindful of all the stakeholders as they should be, particularly the Teamsters."

YRC has more than 40,000 active and furloughed drivers and dock workers eligible to vote on the amended contract. Ballots must be returned to Teamsters headquaters by Aug. 6.
