    Fed Ex linehaul question

Is all of Fed Ex linehaul contracted out to private companies or does Fed Ex actually have linehaul drivers that work for Fed Ex directly.

We have our own Linehaul Drivers at Freight and National.. Ground Contracts out if I am not mistaken. The only thing that is contracted out at Freight is what we termalize as Purchase lanes.. These are lanes that are imbalanced to and from one point.. say we have an average of 14 trailers going to one location a day and they only have an average of 11 coming back.. we will use Purchase carriers to balance the lane instead of running 600 empty miles with two drivers.

Linehaul Drivers with FedEx Freight run both day and night (what we call Day-runs and Shuttle.. Shuttle working the dock if mileage permits) 99.9% of our Linehaul drivers are home each day, and I believe that ground runs teams and singles that pack bags.. Someone correct me on that if I am wrong.. National has both Linehaul drivers and Teams.

    Hope this helps.

To get the correct answer to your question you have to specify which FedEx you are talking about.

    FedEx Express.............orange
    FedEx Ground..............green
    FedEx Freight..............red
    FedEx National LTL.......red
    FedEx Custom Critical...blue

Once you figured out which color OPCO you are looking for, someone can give you a better answer.

    Fed Ex linehaul question

    Thanks everyone for your reply.

River17, I ran into a few Fed Ex drivers at a local gas station and started talking with them they said that they were Fed Ex linehual but worked for a private trucking company.None were wearing uniforms so i can't tell you the color.
It seems like a massive jigsaw puzzle that Fed Ex has put together. Just figuring out who does what works for who etc...

The drivers that you talked to at the gas station probably worked for a contractor that may have a small fleet of trucks leased to FedEx Ground (green). They also have owner operators that do their linehaul, and use sleeper trucks. On the other hand FedEx Freight uses only day cab trucks and only uses company drivers for the linehaul work. FedEx Custom Critical also uses strictly owner operators. If you want to go to work for FedEx Freight as a line driver
you would be driving a company assigned truck for the most part without the headaches of being an owner operator. Also FedEx Freight has better benefits than those guys that drive for independent contractors. Both medical and retirement benefits. Plus the pay is much better. Also you can go to FedEx.com and learn about the different operating companies under the FedEx umbrella.
    Hope this helps.
