i had a pair of 1422 that lasted me 3 years. back in november of 07, i bought a new pair of the same.

with my older pair, i was ankle deep in muck, diesel fuel, oil, water mixtures.

they never leaked or cracked. the outer soles wore out as well as the insoles.

that's why i was sold on future Red Wing products.
I got a feeling the soles of that persons boots were not made for those fluids. I think he had those softer, spongy, gel type soles, rather than those tire tread (Goodyear Welt?) looking soles.
I think the type of sole determines the longevity of the boot.
So, if we are all going to walking over diesel, fifth wheel grease muck we should pick a boot with the correct sole.
    Thats my assumption.

ah yes, i do believe you are talking about the "crepe soles", those sometimes white or off white colored soles......yeah, those are good for general work, not heavy duty.

the soles that are on my boots are that harder rubber material, in fact on the labels of the boots they have the list of what the boots can withstand regarding chemicals, so i usually buy the boots that have the longest list.

here is "the list" from the boots i buy from Red Wing:

If anyone is looking for cheap steel toe boots, you can buy some $35 dollar ones off of payless. They also have a free shipping option.

What they say is true, the older you get the more you spend on your feet.

I need a new pair of black boots

I own 2 pair of Red Wings. I currently wear the style 963 dyed black. They are the most comfortable boot I ever owned. I just recently had my boots resoled after 3 years and I bought an upgraded sole. The boot repair shop damaged my boots and I was given a completely free pair of 963's. I only had to give up my broken in older pair in exchange. For the 200$ I paid I recommend to everyone to check them out. I believe you get what you pay for with most boots.

Check out this PDF on Red Wings that I found interesting. It explains how Red Wing shoes are constructed and it has most of the current boots Red Wing has for sale.
