    volvo problems......

I have been having problems for awhile now with some older volvos 45... numbered ones. The problem I had and heard others have is the button to release the fifth wheel malfunctions and keeps the fifth wheel from locking. I had to deadline my truck cause it would not lock. I always tug test plus I keep the landing gear up about 4-5 inches from the ground when I pull away from the dock and my trailer disconnects from the fifth wheel even though when I do my pretrip its looks locked and I even push in the handle to make sure and it still comes unlocked. I feel unsafe driving my truck and have requested to drive another one but got denied!

Been a problem for years. Usually it's the button on the dash sticking. Drop a trailer and it's still preventable in their eyes though.

I know they have rebuilt several where I am for not fully locking. If you looked underneath you could see the bar was only 2/3 of the way across the kingpin.

Just another cost saving measure. More dropped trailers in the yard, fewer safety awards need to be bought. RC knows a driver that this happened to that was just a couple of months shy of twenty straight years of safe driving. Needless to say, that driver has been somewhat of an actively disengaged employee since it happened.

The last batch of binders will do the same thing.
Rocker switch will catch in the middle and release your 5th wheel after you think it's locked.

For any pencil pushin' beancounters that may read this..."binders" is "cornbinders" or Internationals.

Or you can just call 'em "junk"!

Isn't that kind of like mentioning to them that it would be illegal to pull a trailer due to insufficient hazmat paperwork and getting the ARE YOU REFUSING TO PULL THIS TRAILER question from your friendly controller in HRO. BTW the driver was at a dark terminal and the HM paperwork was missing in its entirety.
