US Navy ship kills 1 after firing at boat off Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — A US Navy ship opened fire on a small boat racing toward it Monday near the Gulf city of Dubai, killing one person, according to American officials.

Lt. Greg Raelson, a spokesman for the Navy's Bahrain-based 5th Fleet, said a security team aboard the USNS Rappahannock issued a series of warnings before resorting to lethal force near Dubai's Jebel Ali port.

"The US crew repeatedly attempted to warn the vessel's operators to turn away from their deliberate approach. When those efforts failed to deter the approaching vessel, the security team on the Rappahannock fired rounds from a .50-caliber machine gun," he said in an emailed response to questions.

I think the Navy will not allow another incident like the USS Cole attack to happen again. I know a woman who lost her husband on the Cole. This will send a clear message to other want to be "David & Goliath" terrorists/pirates. You can be assured the word is out of the consequences of attacking a US Navy ship. This is the way to avoid attacks on our military. Black Water was criticized for their aggresiveness in Iraq but not one person they were assigned to protect was taken prisoner. You can't be nice to people who want to kill you. It is much like trying to be friends with a rattlesnake.

The US military is limited by ROE. Rules Of Engagement. They can't just assume someone is not friendly and open fire on them, USS Cole or otherwise. All hell will break loose if this turned out to be a innocent person who couldn't speak english. Like I noted, for the Navy's sake it would be good if this boat was operated by pirates, terrorists and the likes. Although I seriously doubt a small group of pirates would be dumb enough to try to take on a Naval ship.

I am very aware of the Rules of Engagement having spent four years of my life in the military. I can assure you that nobody on the US ship gave orders to fire at a small boat just because they wanted to be a bully. Whether in territorial waters or in international waters there was a reason the order was given to fire on the boat. If the people on the small craft were moving away from the ship as they alleged there would not have been any rounds fired at them. The commander of the ship is not an idiot. You don't get in a position of authority like this unless you are intelligent & responible. He/she is responsible for the safety of the ship & crew. I can assure you that our military is being tested by enemies to see how aggressive they can be before there is a response.
