Most freight haulers are not hiring now, but to answer your question, it's hard to get on with a freight hauler after otr. I have not understood it but was told one time that otr drivers are set in their ways, a lot are lazy, and most don't have customer service skills. Not my words driver, just what a terminal manager has told me. It would be easier in a good economy though.

If you decide to try, I wish you all the luck. In my opinion, ltl is where it is at. Good pay, benifits, and home. Although p&d your home late a lot, linehaul your gone at night. Either way if you have kids at home you may not see them much, but being gone a couple weeks at a time is much worse. Again, good luck.

BTW, terminal manager was not with this company, but I think their thoughts are about the same at all ltl companies.

I would not get discouraged yet.
I think you are looking for a position as a line driver or a road driver and not a city driver or a P&D driver.
You don't need any people skills to be a line driver and many LTL carriers would probably give you a chance if the economy were in better shape and growing. (Growth is not in Obama's plans).
Many LTL carriers though are forcing line drivers to also work the dock if the run does not include many miles.
Also you may have more competition for a job if one or more LTL carriers close their doors or are absorbed by a competitor.
Best you can do is to try to personally go and speak with the terminal man agers at the different carriers that you like to go to work for and put in an application.
Good Luck and just keep bugging them.
