    teamster pension question

    sponsored links
My father works part-time for a company that is in the teamsters union. (He's retired from GM.) He's worked this part-time job for 12yrs or so and qualified for a pension. They ended up sending him a lump sum of 800 bucks and told him he is not eligible for anymore benefits. So the question is, if he's NOT eligible for any benefits, and continues to work there, can he get out of contributing to the pension??

This is the crap that pisses me off. Come on, these older fellows need the help and are getting hosed. Contact or other info. Especially if the man is paying into the pension and not eligible for benefits.

Doubtful he can get out of it. It is one of those motivators to get people to want full time. Which he probably doesn't want because of social security or something. So he is screwed if he stays there. At least in that sense. He still has a check and 12 years time. And probably a long line behind him of people that want a chance to take his gig.

You would need more information before saying someone got hosed. Where does he work and what local is he in? Maybe that is the way the fund is set up. We would have to see all the facts. That is the way I would go before casting judgment on something. Why didn’t I see any post from you downing the non union companies for completely stopping the retirement benefits of their employees? At least we can all see you are not impartial. YOUR BROTHER ALWAYS!

4 days, lots of looks, being ignored. 1 person with excuse, trying to turn it on me, how sad. Reason my relatives got hosed is on par to what is going on here. You pay in or else, get benefits, maybe, maybe not. Leadership ALWAYS gets theirs, loopholes and fine print that requires contribution, yet no payout. THIS IS UNION CONTROLED MONEY. No one I know in private sector requires theft from wages/company for pension. Only place I did not at least get back what I contributed with interest/growth, was union. Heck, they keep the company money also. THAT is a racket. Think this fellow and the company didn't contribute over $800 to the UNION PENSION FUND in 12 years. And STILL require contribution, come on Muler do you get some of his?

sharpshooter, when you say part time, what are we talking about here? Like one day a week? At that rate you won't get much of a pension credit accumulated and some funds will do a buyout with a lump sum rather than pay a small monthly payment. What led to the payout? Did your father take retirement? If so, why the concern about future contributions? If you are full time and retire you can still work as a casual but will no longer get pension credit once you draw a pension.

I'm a little confused. He wants to retire and collect benefits while he keeps on working at this part time job? Good luck on that one. Now as for what he is eligible to get out of the pension. It probably depends on how many hours he put in each year. There may be a requirement of 1800 for a full benefit year and drops from there. If he got 1000 hours in a year he may get 50% of a benefit year. Actually it is impossible to answer without knowing the fund. I'd say he didn't have enough hours each year to qualify for a benefit year.

He's worked there since he retired from GM about 13yrs ago. Yes it's 1 day a week, Saturdays and they usually call for holidays. Roadrunner, he could care less about getting a pension from a part-time job but, is wondering why pay into it, if there is no benefit to do so? I'll have an update tuesday about it.
He wasn't even aware that he was eligible for a pension till he got a letter saying he was, then when he applied to get it, they wanted copies of his divorce papers from 1985..lol. I'm sure this is just an unintended consequence from when they voted to allow part-timers many years ago. Guys wanted weekends off and never gave any thought to these things down the road. (and they still don't get weekends off) BTW, this is a grocery store chain, not one of the LTLs

I don't see how the man is getting screwed. He only worked there 1 day a week for 12 years and he already cashed in on a lump sum pension payoff. He retired from GM so he probably knew before taking the job how the pension funding worked. It's probably better for him to find another part time job and let some one else take the job that builds up a part time pension credit.
