That close, got to be nuts. Hope he can get put on somewhere to finish out. Serious guys, someone here step up, give this man same contact info. THIS is the reason for your brotherhood. God Speed, and best of luck.
This is not a debate more of a question. My dad worked for Preston from 1979 to 1999 when they closed,so that would give him 19 1/2 years when you put the months into play. He went to pepsi and worked there for 8 1/2 years to total 28 years of union service. He can no longer drive a truck due to an eye injury. Now, since there really is no full time dock workers anymore unless your basically grandfathered in or I know most barns are a combo dock is there any other options with abf, yrc, or usf holland that he could do and that they are hiring for to complete his 30 years? He lives in the Milwaukee region with all 3 companies in the area. He works for Fedex Freight now with me and enjoys it alot, but I would like to see him retire with his full pention as would he.

It is a tough answer. If there even is one. My father looked around. A lot of the pensions don't transfer. He has never gone back to a teamster job as he can't find one to make progress on his pension.
I have a partial pension from my time at coca-cola. But I went to get another union job and they told me it was seperate and I would be starting over. Had to wait 5 years to re-vest and everything.
The guy is in a difficult situation. With an eye injury he should be able to get some disability. But it probably excludes him from what few opportunities he has.
Just my take on it.
Have him go to his old local union and speak to a business agent.Maybe there are other jobs besides freight that he can get work at, liquor and beer distributors , food and supermarket warehouses, whatever , maybe just loading and unloading trucks, as long as hours worked get pension fund contributions to the fund ( central states probably ) that he has his time in. Good luck !
Take the money and run, or work 8 years for 2 years pension or you pass on and get nothing but a thank you from the hall for your money. And if it's left to the wife after they minus 1/2 and then another 300, ouch ! The union loves the greed factor, it a good pay day for them. Don't be fooled it's all about the money.
Best answer on the board....I know that there was talk of alowing memeber to " buy time" to complete a pension but not sure where it stands. As suggested tell Dad to go to the local and talk to them. I also am in simalar situation (18 years with Preston that is where "x151" comes from). But my persion is a mess as I have time in three funds so getting 30 won't help my total package. Looking back now Preston was one great job sorry to see it end ! Wish your Dad good luck and a good retirement !!
Well, I'm certainly not an authority on any of this stuff and the best advise is to check with the local. But, I am going to assume that all of his time is with Central States because of the location. Then I am going to assume that both Preston and Pepsi time is in Master Freight. If he reached age 57 and had 25 years or more service before the changes in 2004 then he could just retire with his 28 years but not be able to work in the trade unless he were to retire and draw 13 checks and be over age 65. Then he could work all that he wanted even in the trade. After that change he cannot buy any time for any reason I believe. He would have to be careful that he does not take a job in a class 17 pension for more than 2 years as it would move him down from a class 18 to 17 and that is quite a cut. I was with CF for 24 and a half years when they shut down in '02. I was 57 and able to purchase the one half year before the change in '04. Therefore I am entitled to a 25 year pension. But the only jobs I could find at the time were with class 17 pensions so I chose to freeze my pension and now work with a non-union company building another small pension. These are tough times with all of the pensions. One has to look at all of the options. With 28 years in the trade he should be under the old pension and his 28 years would equal at least 2,800. Only a difference of 200 over the 30 year pension. Perhaps if he were to stay with FedEx for the five required to vest he could draw a pension with them also.................Just Saying.......Good Luck
In New England Pension Fund, I believe it is not possible to buy hours, it is'' hours worked ,hours paid deal". Maybe the pension fund can give you a list of contributing employers and you can go from there.Nowadays there are more than just trucking companies in the funds, such as school buses and municipalities. you got to think outside the box, the world has changed. When I first started, there was plenty of casual work around, and it all paid list hourly rate and full HW & P rates. Never realized how lucky I have been until reading on here some of the troubles brothers have to endure just to get by. Good luck to all.
@ Wrongway....If your Dad worked all his Teamster years in the Milwaukee area...that would put him in the Central States Pension fund....The 19 1/2 Preston years would come under Master Freight ....If Pepsi also falls under NMFA...That would give him 28 vested years....I don't know when he finished his Teamster career ....but most of us in Central States who retired with FULL pension receive $100.00 per month per year of vested service ....up to 35 years...I'm a retired Teamster carhauler.....but I' m almost positive Freight paid the same as carhaul when I retired in 2002
