    union question

    sponsored links
We have had a lot of changes at the Con dash way. We have a core of guys that think union is the answer. Which is a little backwards since this company is the parasite that killed CF. There are alot of old timers on here that know all the history.

It's a little weird, right now FedEx is going through near identical changes to it's operations. Is this a change in how business is done ? Could a union stop that anyway ?

I ran for Coke. They had a new process come out. Everyone else in soft drink delivery went to lift gates and away from side bays. The union endorsed it. Claiming they didn't want to become antiquated. That this was the new way. Even though it was bad for drivers. It meant longer hours at less pay.

Do you guys honestly think that it's a good idea? With the way unions have abandoned freight ? With as few companies in freight are still union ? Who's side would they really take ? So often the union will back the company. As a healthy company is healthy for workers.

Who do you think has a better chance ? FedEx? Even with it being Hoffa's baby. Isn't that really just to get press? Is there really any chance ?

As changes become more real. Pocketbooks are being squeezed. People are starting to chatter again. We have still not seen any union interest. No one holding signs. Passing info. Nothing. Just the usual. Come to a meeting. Is freight so low that it isn't even worth a showing ?

Just curous. Most of you know my opinion. I would like yours. Not to argue and debate. But to hear from union men and women what they feel the potential is. Good and bad. There are a lot of guys in my barn that read this. It would be informative. Not just to me. But to a larger audience as well.

    Thanks

All the COO's YRC has been thru the union has no say. The company can usually do what ever it wants. The union's role is to see that no one's seniority rights are trampled on. Ditto on the buyouts. Union has no say. Seniority is what the union is big on. In good economic times the union does well with money gains but gives it back in down times. You're always better off with a union than without for a variety of reasons. The pension is what separates the union from the nons..make that used to separate

I say its worth going union if only for the benefits . I don't know what your paying per week for your medical but for the price of dues I know you and your guys over at Con Job would be far better off . When I was still on the truck I would talk to the non guys and it was common for then to say that they were shelling out $125. a week to insure the family and that would go up depending on how many children you had . The dues that you pay come to 2.5 hours pay for the month so if you make say 25 an hour that would be 50 bucks a month and some change plus ya have a medical plan for the family regardless the number of children no worries about preexisting illness , great teamster pension . Your not an employee at will either , they need a reason to fire ya not because the dispatchers neighbor needs a job and its yours . O/T after 8, I know some of the nons do the same but not many . Some unions are bad some are good as for mine they were a pretty good stand up union it was a give and take . I spent 44 years and truly those dues were one of the best investments I made . Between my social security and teamster pension I would have to work 18 hrs. a week overtime . I have absolutely regrets .

So the best we have is.... better health care. Which Obama has ruined any chance of that. And a better pension... well, don't have that either. So what is the lure of a union ?

One should also look at the historical trend not just the last couple of years. This may be the new trend what do I know, but at one time it would be hard to ask this question and then argue against the benifit of being Union in my opinion. Disclaimer....never had a Non Union Job so I can't argue much eihter.

That is the problem. Times have changed. In the past unions were no brainers. At this point. Not so sure. Especially in freight. Where there are so few union carriers remaining.

If I'm not mistaken it hasn't been a good time for union or non union companies. Union pay and pension has been good for decades. As a union driver you don’t have to put up with screw ball bosses, biased decisions, or co-worker harassment or lunatic terminal managers. You can still be fired for slug work performance, but you don’t have to tip-toe around in fear or be at the mercy of weird or grossly incompetent managers. Supervisors are college grads..professional. They can’t fire you on a whim or because they don't like you.

Management can’t lay you off out of seniority. They can’t demote you or prevent you from going to the next higher job when it’s your turn. You don't know what your missing because you're so used to getting whacked with no say on anything. But do enjoy the fact you don't have to pay dues and your company is has a slight cost advantage. Go to the bank with that one. Now if you were an owner operator you are a lone wolf, not a team player. Lone wolfs don't interact well in a union environment.
