STEVENSVILLE -- A semi-truck driver died in an accident on Interstate 94 after he swerved to avoid hitting a small trailer that sat in the westbound lanes, Michigan State Police reported.

The 32-year-old driver from Illinois was driving west on I-94 at the exit for John Beers Road when the accident happened at about 8 a.m. Friday, police reported. His tractor struck a guard rail as it hauled 52,000 pounds of wheat grain.

The trailer he swerved to miss apparently had separated from the truck that was pulling it, police reported.

Police had not released his identity as of Saturday, pending notification of kin.

Berrien County dispatch reported another accident about 1 p.m. Saturday at the 23-mile marker of I-94, also near Stevensville. Four people reportedly were injured, but further information was unavailable.
