Participation in the food stamp program, technically known as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), has increased by 44% from 32.0 million in January 2009 to 46.2 million in October 2011, the last month for which data is available. During that time, the average monthly benefit per person has increased by over 18% from $114 to $135, even though the costs of food eaten at home have increased by only 5%, and even though gross benefits before deductions for income and assets three years ago roughly approximated what was needed to maintain adequate nutrition on a “thrifty meal plan.” Monthly program costs have increased by over 70%, from $3.6 billion to $6.2 billion.

I bet those who lost their jobs were very glad to be able to put some food on the table.
Maybe those who criticize it should live on exactly the same budget to get a feel for its "luxury"

Maybe your not a regular shopper ask those who are, I noticed in Walmart $4.50 a pound got you some tough beef ., a very undesirable cut of beef. Go $10 +++ for something better.
Got to keep eating chicken, we have become a Nation of Chicken eaters but what would happen if there were a bird flue?
Hams can be found for $2-2.50 a pound and is one of the most reasonably priced meats,
Even the Salmon fillets in my Wal Mart Market Place comes from China, the Beef ?

$135/person a family of four that is $540 per month. My family eats well (two growing sons) and I dont spend that much on groceries.

I like the concept of a food bank where people go to get their food. Being on food stamps used to be a thing of shame. Today, there is no shame. The money is placed on a debit card and the kids really think food comes from the govt. Creating dependency is all that Barry has done.
