    The War Against The Young

An analysis of recent jobs figures at Investor.com reveals a disturbing development: the biggest beneficiaries from the economic recovery are Boomers, while everyone else is getting the shaft.Since the Obama administration took office, there has been an epochal shift. Young workers have continued to lose jobs and incomes, while older workers have actually gained ground.

In fact, the Obama administration has seen a boom in the prospects of the 55+ crowd; their (I should say ‘our’) employment stands at a 42 year high. Net, there are 3.9 new jobs for people over 55 since the recession began in December 2007, but there are 8.1 million fewer jobs for the young folks since that time.

Job holders 55 and up have risen by 3.9 million — and fallen by 8.1 million among those under 55, Labor Department data show. It's been 50 months and counting since payrolls peaked, a post-war record. Labor releases the April jobs report on Friday morning.

Some of this shift reflects demographics. Thanks to aging baby boomers, the 55-and-older population has grown by just shy of 10 million since the end of 2007. Meanwhile, those age 35-44 have fallen by 2.5 million.

I would have never thought this would happen, it seemed it was just a few years ago that I went to work driving a truck for a living. Today, I find myself 56 years old and knowing that I will never get to retire.

Trucking has a habit of making life roll off the toilet paper roller quicker than other careers. I spent a pretty good portion of my life helping to start new companies only to watch the owners or managers kill them off. I have had several driving jobs that I would have stayed with all my life, but you can't drive for a company that refuses to exist! What this has done is made many of us older drivers life a life that is a little desperate to attempt to get something out of an industry that just does not treat its participants very well. Many see this a selfishness, most who are younger might see it this way, but they are not there yet. Once they get to the point were they can see the finish line and have nothing to show for it? They might be better able to understand why old men refuse to turn it over to them.

They tell me the day of the outlaw trucker is over. I would disagree with that. I think as time goes on that laws will be tailored to make all truckers outlaws in order to increase their revenue stream. Maybe older drivers feel like they are being shown the door? It is not as if our society sees the older generation as wise and to be honored these days. They are more like children wanting their parents to die off so they can get their inheritance sooner. After all, many of these rules today were started because companies used to run their drivers into the ground. They were originally meant to protect the driver from the company that expected them to run two log books and take road medication to get it done. Now the company boys think their job is to bust the driver for crimes their daddies encouraged us to do!

Be patient! We will be dead soon enough. It is not our fault the world is falling apart. After all, we are the children of the people who went through the depression and dust bowl. We can't help it if history is doomed to repeat itself.
