Default Newbie Questions

Hi all. This is my first post here, and would like to pick your brains on a couple of topics.

I've been an independent delivery contractor for about 5 years. The first 3 1/2 years was as a delivery contractor for FedEx Home Delivery. After that, I stayed in the industry, picking up delivery gigs here and there. I don't drive a big rig, as I assume most here do. I driver a 12 foot box truck, but I have an opportunity to expand my business. In order to do so, I am told I will need a Workers Comp policy, recognized in the State of NJ, and I must also procure $50,000.00 worth of cargo insurance.

As I was Googling cargo insurance rates, it seems like most of them are for individual shipments. I understand there is something called Open Cargo Insurance, which would cover whatever I carried. Does anyone know, or could you suggest the best places to purchase this type of insurance. I already have a commercial policy for my truck, but my insurer does not write cargo insurance riders for it.

I would also like to know if anyone knows any companies offering WC, and what some of the better rates are. I've been told that WC costs are tied to payroll. Since I've been a one-man show, this will be the first opportunity for me to hire a driver and compare rates for cargo ins and WC.

Thanks in advance.
