Whenever a people are oppressed, they look for a Saviour. Listen to the old southern Negro spirituals. They looked to Jesus to return and deliver them from this life of hardship. Not unlike the rapture doctrine taught in many Churches today. That escapist mentality can place people in a state where they believe they are only to trust God for deliverance and not help themselves. It's the extreme of what Jimmy G's quoted.
