I have tons of experience with mods like this and all I can say is there have been some issues with these mods.
(And there are quite a few shops that do this kind of mod)
I can't go into more details due to the restrictions here on the board and I don't want to bash anyone.
From a service standpoint any time you are making a radio run hotter then you are asking for problems this holds true with anyone's mods. Heat is a big killer in electronics so any time you increase the heat you are loosing life on the equipment.
There are a lot of mods out there some are good and some are bad. Some will give you more watts on a meter but you have lost in the clarity and life of the radio.
Radio mods are special to the person doing them and it all depends on the person as to how they feel about there work and the kind of pride they take in what they do as to what you will get. I do know some good techs and I know a lot of techs that are only interested in the money. This is why I closed my shop and started building custom radios to order you can't take the time do do everything 100% when you have a line waiting for you to fix there radios. That is the trouble in a lot of Truck Stop CB Shops. I know in my case there would sometimes be 7 or 8 people waiting in line to get things worked on. I used to call it the McDonald's drive through of CB Radios.
I do think we all tend to have our own way of doing things and I am not going to say who is right, all I can say is what I have experienced on the bench and this is what I am making my option on what I have personally seen and repaired.
This is not an attack on any one shop as I have seen a lot of poor work done and I have repaired a lot of blown up radios for different reasons from a lot of different shops.
The bottom line is you have to be comfortable with the shop and person you have do the work. Chances are if you have a good feeling about the person then you will be ok. Also ask around and see who is recommended listen to the radio and ask who did the mods to a radio that sound great that should help in making your decision. One last thing to remember is you have to have a antenna system that is work right to get the performance out of the radio I don't care who does your radio if the antenna system is not right you will not be happy with the radio.
