Kiwi is on a distinguished road
Default Kiwi Driver

Hi all,

I've been in America for the last couple of months completing some research to finish off my marine science degree back in New Zealand (N.Z), and was keen to stay on after I finish to possibly go truck driving.

I've been driving trucks throughout my time at university and find it gives me a good balance of theoretical and practical work in my life. Driving's in my blood now, and I'm thinking that taking some time off from my academic career and seeing a bit of the country via truck driving.

I talked to a few guys in N.Z before I left about driving over here and they all said they loved it. I have the numbers of some U.S recruiters from back home, but I was wondering what you guys thought would be the best way to approach it. If it was possible I would rather liaise directly with an employer, but, I don't mind going through a recruiter if that's what I need to do. The main problem is I would need to sort out a working visa, license etc. I have my full truck and trailer license in N.Z and was told by the N.Z licensing authority that it would be directly transferable to the U.S, although I find that hard to believe.

It's been interesting driving along the highways over here and looking at the differences in truck combinations compared to N.Z. I've noticed the majority of the units here are semi-trailer combinations, where back home the most common unit is probably a full truck and trailer, we also have a lot of b-trains, and of course semis.

Any of your comments and suggestions on which approach I should use would be helpful.

Thanks in advance,
Myles
