Default How do I make my radio sound clear and clean

How do I make my radio sound clear and clean

That is the question most want to know and the answer is simple..
TURN IT DOWN!! You have the controls on the radio that can make you sound great or make you sound like crap and most don't use them.
I know if the know is not all the way to the right then something is wrong right?? Wrong.. Setting the microphone gain all the way up for the most part makes you sound like crap when you are close to someone. If people are having to turn there volume down to understand you then you are just too loud.
Ideally you want to be clear and to do that you you don't want to be over modulated. Most of you have a radio that the limiter has been disabled so the radio is wide open and it sure sounds like it. Now I know some of you have a radio that you can get away with running the mic gain all the way open but it is not necessary and all you are doing is to generate more noise on the channel you are trying to talk on.
If you would take all the radios that are over modulated and turn them down you would find the noise level would drop about half. Now if that were to happen you would be able to talk further and hear a lot further, wouldn't that be something.. You see what happens is that when your voice on AM runs out you still have some carrier going on and that in itself multiplied by X number of drivers generate half of the noise you all hate. Look at it like this, if you have a hot rod with a supped up motor you don't run it wide open all the time. No you don't but it sure is nice to have the power if you need it all you have to do is to turn it up a little when you need it and when you don't turn it down. If everyone would try this you would see a difference. I build custom radio and I do increase the power and the audio in them but I try to tell people to run them as low as you can to still be heard. Along time ago I sold President George 10 meter, this was the cleanest sounding radio I have ever heard and you just could not make it sound bad. Well this is what I ran into.. I don't like this radio.. My reply was why.. The answer people tell me it doesn't sound like a Galaxy.. My reply are you talking as far as you want to and most of the time the answer was yes but it just is not loud.. My reply so people are having a hard time hearing you then.. The answer No but it does not sound like a Galaxy..
You see where I am going the radio got the distance and was clear and clean but it did not sound lake a Galaxy.. Over modulated and splattering all over the place. So I am sad to say the radio did not go over well here in the states but it should have been a big hit if people understood that it was the way they should sound.
I may catch some heat for this but it is the way things should be and if we started working on it now we just might make a difference in the air waves.
OBTW When you are at a Truck Stop you don't need to run 500 watts to talk 2 rows back..
OK, I'm ready for the lynching..
Until next time drive safe..

I don't want to get too into it because I'm not a tech but I'll tell you what I've got and what I do.

I have a Galaxy 33 doing about 47w with the RF power set at 2w on the low side. I run a Texastar 350HDV behind it with an Astatic 636 mic. I go back and forth between the Wilson 2000 and the Wilson Silverload with the 18' mini 8.

Now, what's been working for me is, running full power on my amp but keeping my MG at about 11 o'clock. As long as I have everything tuned right, I never have any problems or complaints. On the route that I run, I get nothing but compliments on my sound, clarity and how far I can be heard. I'll never give up this set up for anything.

That's my story...

Good story..
You have a great set up and only thing I would have to say is I would run the Texas Star on medium instead of high. I think your secret to success is the fact that you are running the mic gain at 11 o"clock and not wide open. Sounds like you have taken the time to get it right and it is working for you. I knew the post would be a little controversial but I am glad you have a good sounding system and you are running the radio at a good level and it shows in the complements you get on it.
As they say "if it aint broke don't fix it"
Be safe..

Controversial maybe .....But, true ! Another excellent post from CBR ! There are many simple things we can do as operators that would improve CB for everyone . It seems everyone wants to be the loudest one on the block .

Controversial...NOT!!!! The only folks that will get upset are the loudmouth pecker checkers that think they are walking on people with a stock radio and the mike gain wide open...LOL, you give the best info we have gotten in a long while CBR, I appreciate what you are doing here.

My story: Gen Washington, mike gain at noon, rf power low.

Galaxy 45, mike gain at noon, rf power at 1000.

ECHO wide ooooppppeeeennnn..haha j/k!!
