Default New to CB's--Advice

I've done some research prior to posting this, yet I am still rather new to the whole CB thing. I've become slightly overwhelmed with all the brand loyalties, and was just looking for some general information and some clarification.

I was considering purchasing the Cobra 29 NW 40-Channel but I have heard that one with weather stations was better and preferable among OTR/Long Haul drivers. I have also read on several occasions that the Cobra's are good provided you are willing to modify them. What is the down-to-earth consensus on this?

Eventually, I will purchase a better unit, or a more powerful one, but for the time being, I just want an all around good performer that will keep me satisfied for a while.

Input is appreciated.

personally, i myself have done the "c.b thing" over the years and found i was spending money foolishly. i had many brands/types. currently, i have 2 c.b. radios. a "mini" cb for my pick up truck, and a cobra classic 25........

that 29 model you was looking at is ok. it'll do you fine, RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX....meaning, you DO NOT have to have it "tuned and peaked". to me, that's a waste of money, and if done wrong, it'll FRY in due time.

buy a c.b. radio that is on sale (there are always sales). never pay too much. buy online if you can. just do a "google search" for c.b.radios.

around $100 is enough for a radio. try your BEST to not fall prey to claims other drivers make about thier radios. do not put yourself out at the expense of others.

I was looking to upgrade from my uniden pc78 as well... like you, confused my the amount of info out there. I went to the site of one of the sponsor's here Custom CB Radios, We build what others only dream about. From Cobra to Galaxy to Connex . We Also carry a full line of accessories for all your CB Radio Needs.. Asked some questions, got some real good advice. I think I will go with his cobra 29 stealth with the rfx-75 installed on it. He also has a cobra 29 weather version that has been upgraded as well. click on custom radios on the left side of the page.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I appreciate it.

After doing some more research, I think I will end up getting the Cobra 29 w/weather. In the event I want to do something more to it, I will have the capabilities, and for a starter CB it should suit me fine.

I bought a used 29 two years ago and it has worked great since I bought it. I paired it with a Wilson 2000 antenna I got for free. All it needed was a new whip. I can hear forever sometimes with my budget set-up. I've thought about modding my radio a few times, but never really saw the point.
