Good point. Something my dad (also a trucker) has always done. Case in point:
We were sitting at a redlight many years ago and my dad kept looking in his rearview mirror then looked ahead at light and side roads then gun the car. About time we crossed the road, with all of us screaming, we heard a loud crash.
My dad had noticed a car coming up behind at a fast speed and when the car didn't slow down he checked for a place to go (straight ahead) then gunned the car. It kept us from behing rear ended by the car behind us which wasn't so lucky. Would have been a 3 car pile up.
He gave me a lot of other pointers over the years while learning to drive and I've passed them on to my kids.
His favorite advice to me was: STAY OUT FROM BEHIND THE WHEEL UNTIL YOU LEARN TO DRIVE.
Still scratching my head over that one.

If I come up on stalled traffic while driving my own car, I put the 4-ways on to alert people from behind. I also look behind and try to prevent what might become a bad situation by getting out of the way.
Not every 4 wheeler knows to do this and expects traffic from behind to stop if they are stopped.
Moving forward and using this as a preventative learning experience, this is just a helpful tip that might help us all in the future. |
