I know this is a bit off topic but I use something in my own car that I learned while driving trucks on the highway.
If I come up on stalled traffic while driving my own car, I put the 4-ways on to alert people from behind. I also look behind and try to prevent what might become a bad situation by getting out of the way.
Not every 4 wheeler knows to do this and expects traffic from behind to stop if they are stopped.
Moving forward and using this as a preventative learning experience, this is just a helpful tip that might help us all in the future.

We have an area that may be similar to this on a county road near my home. There is a railroad crossing beyond two dips in the road. If a line of vehicles develope due to train traffic they can be hidden just over the hill and you not see them until...I always stop on top the hill until a couple vehicles are stopped behind me, only then will I drift down behind those at the bottom.

I have ran I-65 for a lot of years and I can say that it can be a real mess at times. I can say the only reason I haven't had something bad happen me was luck.

Good point. Something my dad (also a trucker) has always done. Case in point:

We were sitting at a redlight many years ago and my dad kept looking in his rearview mirror then looked ahead at light and side roads then gun the car. About time we crossed the road, with all of us screaming, we heard a loud crash.

My dad had noticed a car coming up behind at a fast speed and when the car didn't slow down he checked for a place to go (straight ahead) then gunned the car. It kept us from behing rear ended by the car behind us which wasn't so lucky. Would have been a 3 car pile up.

He gave me a lot of other pointers over the years while learning to drive and I've passed them on to my kids.

His favorite advice to me was: STAY OUT FROM BEHIND THE WHEEL UNTIL YOU LEARN TO DRIVE.

Still scratching my head over that one.

Or maybe training, experience and forethought?

It dont matter why the traffic was stopped, the truck did not stop. If it was a construction project and it had traffic backed up, its ok for the truck to hit cars ?? What if there was a accident that had traffic stopped, its ok for the truck to hit cars ?? Basically the ones here blaming the cops are saying it was alright for that driver to not stop in time because the cops should not have chased a seatbelt violator. Pretty lame. The driver did not stop in time, it dont matter why he was stopping. I am for 'shoot to kill' on all police chases, kill them before they kill.
