Default Need Help! Trade Free Labor

I need an O/O to help me with my backing and driving skills in return for my free labor. I went to and graduated from Western Truck School Jan 11 of this year. I failed my alley doc backup skills test twice at the DMV and only have 1 more chance before I have to get a new permit. So rather than rush to try again I thought I would trade my free labor as a lumper or cleaning your trucks, or even as a backup driver for a team but probably need an owner operator as all the companies I have contacted said their insurance companies do not allow permitted drivers to drive. Since I need to get this Class A license to work to feed my family and pay my bills, I need some help fast and am willing to work free for a couple 2 or 3 weeks in trade for letting me practice backing up alley doc and parallel parking. I live just north of Sacramento, California and can work anywhere in Northern California. If you can help please respond and I will send you my
resume, cover letter and clean medical and drivers license record. I am older guy at 59 Y O and have good work ethics and history. Also a Veteran. The school made no guarantees and their training is not very
much so I can expect little from them. I need to move on and get this
license. Thank You.

The Training academies out there would like to take your money, cram as much info & bookwork in your head as possible in just a couple weeks. Okay, now you understand the fundamentals a little better, they can train you how to drive a truck, but they cant teach you how to be a truck driver.

As for learning how to back a trailer in an alley dock, or even parallel, you first have to VISUALIZE what you're doing. Get out the truck, look at the dock setup they have for you, create a plan of exactly how you're going to handle this before you ever set up for the back. Setup is 90% of what you're about to do, an inproper setup will guarentee a failed backing scenerio.

This may sound a little funny, but get yourself a toy tractor / trailer combo (from Wal-Mart, find a small one). Spend some time one evening at your dining room table pushing the thing around backward. Take a piece of paper, draw your self a dock or some dots for where you thing the cones should be and push this thing around with your finger to set up and maneuver this thing into its place. What your doing here is obtaining a "birds eye view" and developing a mental visualization for what you're trying to do.

I used to be a trainer for Werner, usually when I got a new driver they were really struggeling with their backing, this is what I used to have them do & it works.

I wish you luck & hope you can find a local OO or company to let you do some practice in their parking lot. Be careful & we'll probably see you out there somewhere someday.

Roadworthy,

The toy truck practice that GBHE mentioned helped a couple of guys in my class with "visualization" as well. I'm good at backing up myself and may do it as well to help me with my setup. Another place that you might find help at is posting on craigslist - http://sacremento.craigslist.org

Setting up an account is free in most states/cities, and I'd suggest posting in the "skilled trades" section. I see a lot of truck driving jobs posted there, well at least in Chicago. Good luck!

Thumbs up Great Tip! GBHE

Hey, I think I'll be out the door to go purchase a toy truck! It only makes sense to me 'cause truckers need to be very "visual" in order to get the job done.
