Default The best advice you received when you was a new driver.

There are a lot of new drivers on here now. I know they have a lot of questions about trucking so I thought if we could all offer all the new drivers the best advice we received maybe we could pass on some good old time trucking knowledge to the new guys.

I remember this huge guy nick named "chainsaw" telling me to take my time. Recheck everything twice. If you don't understand something ask again again.

I remember being green as could be and working out of the hall as a spare. The dispatcher at the hall told me " don't screw up". It was some of the best advice I got.

"Son, are you really sure you want to be a truck driver?"

"You really need to move out of low gear now, driver. 3000 RPM's are fine for cars, but not trucks"

"You might want to swing out a tad wider on the next sharp right turn, driver. That pedestrian on the corner might have size "13" shoes next time you run the curb."

"lefty loosy, righty tighty"

"Remember to idle it back in next time, driver. We cant keep replacing those dock bumpers"

"Black ice is bad, very bad"

"High winds and an empty set of vans are worse".

"Remember driver, truck-stop food isnt the same as a home cooked meal."

"No, the waitress isn't the same as your wife. She doesn't serve *that* kind of desert, driver."

"If it ain't your truck, leave your polished skull head gear shift knob at home, driver".

No that is not a damsel in distress walking around out here in the truck stop parking lot at 3AM, driver.

You might want to slow down on this grade, driver. Hitting an 8 mile 6% downgrade with 80,000 lbs at 70 MPH in gusty winds wasn't a good idea.

Next time you might want to bring more then a carton of cigarettes on a 5 day OTR trip, son.

No, that isn't a UFO from "Close encounters of the Third Kind", son. Thats a state highway patrol vehicle."

You were supposed to stop at that vehicle inspection station back there, driver. You did see the road sign that said "All Trucks Stop at Scales", right?

Always make sure your truck is full of fuel before you scale out. 1 gallon of fuel weighs 8 pounds. I learned that one at the scale house in Oklahoma after i fueled in Joplin, MO and was 900 pounds over on my drive tires. Learn and use the SMITH system!
