Default driving on ice?

Hi - my first post here, I'm about to go to truckin' school. I hate driving on ice in a regular car-- snow I can deal with, but I hate ice. Does anyone here have trouble arguing with companies about driving on ice? My dad was a trucker for years- he said the key word is to mention "safety"... thoughts?

Default Company Attitude

My employers have always told me to park it safely and wait for conditions to improve. Tri-State Motor Transit paid us during the first eight hours of delay for snow or ice, and they paid the motel bills. Key Line Freight would not release empty trailers to those drivers who wanted to drive home for the weekend when the roads were icy. Once again, they paid the motel bills.

Trucks have no control on ice. I have waited on the shoulder of the Interstate for salt to take effect. One time, I noticed a loss of traction on upgrades to viaducts. I had a single axle pulling a set of doubles. Another time, I blundered onto ice near a river. Finally, the salt truck arrived and backed over the bridge salting his own path. I waited for the salt truck to return and do the backward salting again. I followed the salt truck after turning my headlights off.

MOST comapanyies will say in orentation that they want you to pull over and wait it out.....thats in orentation....not real life. Some Dispatchers will say go or theaten to fire you. Heres a peice of advice that you will hear over and over....there isn't a load of freight that is worth your life! The thing is when you are driving nervous you will have the tendancy to over react, because you scared, on ice thats a bad combination. If the receiver wanted and are dying to get it on Monday they will really need it on Tuesday!

Haha good point. Do you all check national weather reports every time you stop? Do they cover what maximum save mph winds are with empty trailers, full trailers, etc., in school, or do you learn that by experience only?

i learned one thing and that is empty doubles do not like windy weather espcially when your tractor is riding the white line on the right and your rear trailer is crossing the dotted white line
