Question Local jobs

Just wondering if it's possible to get a local job straight out of school? If so,with what companies?

I wont kid you. It wont be easy and they will use your lack of experience to pay you a low wage.

Your best bet is driving ten-wheelers like propane trucks and cement trucks.

As far as finding a local P&D job right out of truck school, you might get lucky, but it wont be very easy.

Just remember that local jobs require backing up around objects that you didn't have to contend with in truck school with the cones.

I had one company that I used to deliver to as a P&D driver using a 48 foot trailer with a liftgate no less, that required blind-side backing around a power pole on a two way street in a busy part of town, and the old dock was obviously set up for bobtail or short trailers back in the 1930's or 40's when things were less stressful.

It sure was nice of all those mad-as-hell 4 wheelers wishing me a good day by honking their horns repeatedly and giving me those one-fingered salutes, as I was backing in to the hole.

If you think you can handle stuff like that, I wish you good luck and good job hunting, Jacknife.

Jacknife,
Welcome to Truckingboards. Only a few LTL Companies would consider hiring you locally right out of school. I've heard that Conway and Old Dominion might. I think at Conway you'd work the dock a lot until you drove. Ranger 309 told you right....it'll be hard at first...but as you're getting experience don't give up hope. We all had to start from the beginning and all felt like you do at first.

I started at a food distributor that delivered to schools and burger joints. Be careful with the ready mix trucks and tank wagons. The center of gravity is higher than a standard truck so they roll more easily.

Jacknife, Conway will hire you right out of school. They have a big terminal on the west side just off 270. And I have heard that Old Dominion in Col recruits at the local Roadmasters driving school. You need hazmat and doubles to apply. Find out if Dairymen's milk is in Columbus, they hire grads in Cleve. Follow up on ads in the paper, you never know. If you're background and MVR are clean sometimes you're the only applicant they can hire!
