Default Stay off This Road

GALICE — A tractor-trailer owned by a Nebraska trucking firm got stuck and caught fire on the eastern end of the remote Bear Camp Road early Tuesday morning.

The incident marks the second time this month that a truck owned by Omaha-based Werner Enterprises, Inc. became bogged down on the narrow mountain road, and suggests the Bear Camp Road is still being mistaken as a main road to the coast by people who have no knowledge of the area. Mail Tribune - Truckers learn perils of Bear Camp Road the hard way - April 18, 2007

My wife and I went across this road last September but I had the advantage of knowing that is a logging road. [About two-thirds of this road is single lane with turnouts.] [ The 60 some mile trip took over 2 hours.] I missed the turn off for this road in broad daylight. I can't imagine someone that is totally unfamiliar with the area finding it in the dark. When you first make the turn you go about 100 yards and you think "do I really want to be taking this?"

I took the turn that the Kim family took but realized my mistake in 25 feet. Again this was in daylight.

The driver spinning the tires long enough to catch them on fire is beyond my imagination. It is stated that he is 44 years old. Truck driving must be a second career for him.

There is a road like this down South someplace and I can't remember where. Down in the Virginia,North Carolina, and Tennessee area if memory serves me right. But its been a LONG time ago and I only did it once and swore never to do it again. The mileage saved wasn't worth it.Also here in Pa we have a curve on Rt 30 that I swear when you go around it you are looking at your tail lights.I did this one time with a 53' trailer (Never again) and I also did it once with a set of Pups for yellow freight ( that wasn't too bad) only because I made a delivery in route to the area.

I have seen an England trailer droped part way across,I've seen a Snyder off the road on it's side.I had a pic of a Werner wrecked on the gap too! I don't know why Tennessee doesnt mark it on Rt 411 before you get too it. My wife and I were riding Deal's gap one Sun,we were at the parking area on the Tennessee side and here came two Snyders "headed for the Gap". Their were three county cops there and they all three took off after them. When we got to the damn overlook they were trying to get them turned around.

"You would think they would quit going up there"

You would think they would post some kind of sign, especially after someone died.
