Default Newbie here.

Hello everyone,

My name is Steve and I am seriously considering trucking after I retire from serving in the U.S. Navy for the last 21 years. My brother is an Owner/Operator and my nephew drives for CRST.

I've always wanted to drive a truck for as long as I can remember. Being away from home is nothing new to me nor is working long, hard days.

If anyone out there can give me any advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

Steve

Driving can be a rewrding career. I been driving for 16yrs now and I'm still enjoing it. Since being away from home is not an issue for you I say go for it. You'll make a good living and get to travel.

Welcome to the boards Sphipps. I'm also an ex squid. My advice is to try to get on with a LTL carrier. Better pay & bennies. Even if you got to start off dock/cdl. Just about everyone starts OTR. But it's a much better life style working LTL. Best of luck and keep us informed.

Stay away from Swift Trucking and read all the small print on the forms before you sign your life away for a year or so, if you do go OTR.

Lots of the companies will flat lie to you about pay and home-time, ect., so talking to drivers that work there is a good idea.

Good luck and stay safe driving out there,
Steve.

Welcome Steve. I got my CDL hauling food locally. 3 years in Michigan and 6 in the Midwest. Got spoiled being home everynight and I just recently started with LTL. Just now thinking seriously about making the leap to OTR but might wait to see how all this 'Mexican company truck' thing affects everybody first though.
Good luck.
