Is this employment scenario possible?? Greetings everyone!
I am new to the board and thought you all would be a good group to ask about employment. Here is where I am at:
1. I do not hold a cdl, so I am looking for a company that can provide training. I live in Atlanta Georgia so there are a couple of schools here I can go to on my own if I really had to.
2. I have a family...wife, two boys ages 12 and 9 that I want to see often. I am 41 yrs old and used to seeing them daily. In speaking with OTR companies it looks like I would be out at least 7 days up to as much as a month before I had any hometime. Even then, hometime is only a few days and then it is back out on the road. I can't do that. Is there a company out there that will hire a newbie like me, and get me home during the week? I don't have to be home daily but a few times per week plus the weekend would work.
3. In speaking with the OTR companies, I was told to expect about 2,500 miles on average. Starting pay would be from .24 cpm to .295 cpm. Doing the math the numbers look really thin once you figure in taxes and the time away from home. Can decent money - $600+ per week take home - be made in trucking without having to live on the road and get a divorce?
I have spoken to Maverick, TMC, WH Trucking, PAM and a couple of other known companies and basically their stories are all the same as to pay, miles and hometime.
Am I barking up the wrong tree here with trucking? Is it possible to drive and have a family life and make decent money?
Thanks in advance for the input and answers. |
