Question Is it everything you thought it would be?

I'm not a driver but a few of us at work were asking each other if our jobs were what we thought it would be when we first picked our career path.

So I ask you.........is trucking everything you imagined/thought it would be when you first chose to "go trucking"?

I think so, I have been in freight and foodservice, I love foodservice, hate freight, I wish it was like when dad drove, drivers were looked up to, now they are looked on as scum by alot of the public, drivers now days bring it on theirself though, look at the way some drive, dress, ect.. Dad said in his day drivers took pride more than they do today, I guess I have changed right along with the times, everyone on the road seems to have a chip on their shoulder, I accept that, I just try to stay out of the way and do my job and represent my company as a professional. I do love driving trucks and I love my job, I think the Lord gave me this ability, thats why I am good at what I do and enjoy it very much, I think my choice has lived up to my expectations, yes its what I thought it would be and more, I just wish the industry would clean up its act, just a few bad apples spoil the whole bunch.

I agree. I'm a new driver and to answer the question, no. Driving a truck is a lot of responsibility, a lot more than I ever imagined. It's also a lot harder than I thought, but I like it and enjoy it more than working in the corporate world. My father was a truck driver as well and when I was a kid, I use to go on the road with him in the summer. Back then you didn't hear all the trash on the CB like you do now. You could actually leave the CB on and listen to it.

Default Shirt Sleeves

There were no truck drivers in my family. My grandfathers immigrated to factory and farm jobs, but retired as very successful retailers. My parents were professionals in law and music. I proved the theory "shirt sleeves to shirt sleeves in three generations" by becoming a trucker. As a teenager in the 1950s, I was a trailer washer and mechanic's helper, so I knew exactly what I was getting into. It was the right occupation for me, but I do not recommend it to anyone.

Boy that really a good question Seven.

The only part of my job I don't like is the hours. I have to put my life on hold M-F. I can't make plans at night, have to take days off just to go to a Dr. and really miss out on a lot of things.

I didn't mind the hours at first but after more than 20 years of doing this I have to admit it's getting old.

Thumbs up

You guys are awesome! Thanks for sharing your views.

I think honest answers will go a long ways to help those newbies out there that think driving a truck is just like what they seen in the movies.
