Default driver unloading at food warehouses

can anyone tell me why wegmans gorcery warehouse doesnt make drivers unload like all the other food warehouse do,maybe they care about the drivers need for rest so they do all the work.If they can do this why can't the other warehouses do the same thing

Are you saying the drivers don't have to hire lumpers at Wegmans ? Or are you refering to company drivers ? I hated going to grocery wharehouses only because I aklways thought Lumpers were a cheap way for the companys to get out of hiring their own people.
I delivered a load of juice from Rochester NY to Giant foods in Carlisle Pa one time and I was told hire a lumper or else I had to unload the load myself by hand because I wasn't allowed to use their equipment. $68.00 to unload four skids. Unreal.

I remember when I first started driving,my trainer and I went to this place with a floor load. The guy in charge told us that if we hired their lumpers,we would be out of there in half an hour but if we did it ourselves we would be there all day.We got the message and paid the lumpers.

Wegmans isn't the only one, if you ever come to Tankersley, you will love it, you can help if you want, sit in the truck if you want, no lumpers, all our guys do the work, LTL hates us because our guys go trough everything with a fine tooth comb, if they don't like it they can take it back, I never heard of anyone leaving with a load though. We seem to take care of our vendor transportation, I'm proud to work there.

I could be wrong but I think it's because Wegman's is a Teamster represented co. and my union believes it takes away dock jobs if you do the unloading. always remember you are a truck driver not truck driver/ dock worker. That's the way it is supposed to be however some drivers would rather unload their trucks for $30.00 instead of $20.00 an hour loke they are supposed to while the truck driver gets his or her's proper D.O.T required rest. That's my two pennies.

Viva Los Teamsters !!

I'm sure your all kidding around about Wegmans warehouse.
I was at the dry goods warehouse on South Winton Road twice with finger print sort, and seg.,loads just this last week.
Wenesday,and Friday.
You hire a lumper,or do your own sort, and seg.,at that warehouse,or you can drive out their gate back where you came from.

Now the grocery warehouse on Brooks Ave is a whole different story.
They will clamp most everything, and all you have to do is put the empty skids where they want to put the clamped tiers of cases on.
Both these warehouse are Teamsters union.
Brooks wants to get you in,and out as quik as they can so your not holding up a dock.
But South Winton doesn't care if your there all day.
I know all about their operation,as I live in ,and drive a city route for UPS Freight in the Rochester area.
I've been finger printing freight at both of these warehouses since 1966.
