Default cab overs? where are they?

i have noticed that i don't see any new long haul cab overs any more. why? with citys tighter then ever the need for tight turning cab overs would be incressed i would think. and yes i know the old saying " the guy in the cab over was the frist to the scene" but i all ways liked the look of a cab over though i can amagine that the ride could be alittle on the harsh side.

to keep drivers from quitting the job, companies that HAD cabovers have switched to "hoods" or better known as conventionals. cabovers were not always the most comfortable rigs out there, this i know from personal experience. my first time driving a "hood" i swore to God Almighty that if i was ever to drive another cabover, i'd quit the job, and i did, or, when i applied for a driving job, i would ask first if they had cablovers. if the person doing the hiring ever said yes, (and some did) that they did have cabovers, i got up and walked right out the door.

i think now you will mostly find cabovers that are doing container hauling from the various piers from the shipyards. good. keep them as container haulers.

Us old time gear jammers used to call the cab overs bone shakers.

Also funny how when your sitting so close to the motor you were warmer in the winter, and the summer.

I drove a few in my early years of city driving, and now that they have fadded away I for one don't miss them.
I will agree that they were good turning in tight places, but as the trailers got longer,it wasn't good to go into any tight spots no matter what power unit you were using.

Nope not me I don't miss them old bone shakers one little bit.

Well your not seeing new ones because no manufacture is making them any more. Pete and KW quit several years ago and I am sure that Freightliner has stopped also. That leaves International, AKA Intertrashional, Cornbinder, Farmall, a POS, Manure Spreader and other names but never a truck.

And after JB and Schneider started using conventional I believe they stopped making them also.

Freightliner quit making their cabover (The Argosy) a couple years ago. I can't say I'll miss them. The first semi I ever drove was an '87 International cabover.

Man I remember some that made me wonder how a man fit into them. UPS used to have some day cabovers, Internationals that looked like the driver had to stand in them. even linehauled with them. And Roadway had some city units, Fords I think. Had them in their lot for years after they should have been junked and once in a while you would see some poor city driver out in one. My guess was he was on the S/L.
