| | Company OTR Drivers... Are You covered?
Here's a question for all of you Company OTR Drivers. What, if any, kind of insurance do you have for your personal belongings that you carry in your company truck? I asked my company for some info on that subject and they were shocked. Seems no one had ever asked that before. The answer: They don't cover my stuff in the truck. Go figure.

Go figure. | well frankly, why should they..............???
i mean to say, its thier rig/trailer set-up, along with the cargo. they have enough worries about those things, and they are not about to add anymore insurance to cover your "assets"..............
as long as i've been driving, there isn't any such insurance available for our belongings.
look at it this way, say for instance you are a renter of an apartment.........
I DO KNOW FOR A FACT, the landlord doesn't have insurance for your belongings, and why should he, your belongings ARE NOT his responsibility.
same way in the trucking business. your personal belongings are no ones else's responsibilty...............
i take it your are very new to trucking........????
so for you to say, "go figure"..........
you really seem to expect too much from the trucking world..........
better get used to some cold hard facts.......

Well, evidently you didn't read the question. I wasn't bemoaning the fact that my company wouldn't cover my personal assets. I was asking if any truckers knew of insurance such as "Renter's Insurance" that would cover my personal belongings on the truck. As far as the "go figure" statement, it was just that. They said they did not cover my belongings and did not know who would or could. Perhaps YOU should clean your glasses and learn to read before spouting off. As far as what I expect from the trucking world, a fair days pay for a fair days work is what I expect. Go Figure!

there can't be any "insurance" that you are looking for. you are not in one place, like an apartment. if you have such "high value" items, perhaps you shouldn't be taking them with you. what's to say that you "didn't steal" them yourself and file a claim....?? there would be no proof, unless you have a police report. then, if its found that you 'stole" your own items, you'd be charged with making a false statement, and insurance fraud.
even if you were to be living in a truck for weeks or months at a time, its not a legal residence, not making obtaining insurance possible.
"go figure", leave at home the really vaulable stuff, if you're so worried about someone stealing your belongings, otherwise, you'll be looking like this guy.... |

Well, now I know. Thank You for your input, after all I did ask for it. I heard the same thing from my insurance agent too. I wonder tho... is an owner-ops personal items insured along with the vehicle? If so, it does seem odd that they can be insured, but a "working company driver's" items cannot. For all intents and purposes, while I am on the road, this is my home also.

For all intents and purposes, while I am on the road, this is my home also. | i still am of the "thinking" that even an O/O will not be covered. now think, an O/O's truck insurance would "probably" include "theft coverage", but that is usually for the vehicle and any repairs to be made if and when found. take your personal vehicle for instance, say a brand new 4X4 and you have special wheels, tires, and a host of "other accessories"..........follow me so far...? if that personal truck was stolen, and you had a "rider" coverage for the added accessories, then you would be covered, but not neccessarily for the full amount, i mean, you know too, its called "depreciation" right..?
your/mine personal belongings is/are just that, personal.......its not a needed component of the truck. like say for instance, the APU unit. if you had an APU unit installed on your rig, you'd be covered under the theft coverage, because the APU is an added component of the truck.
laptops, cb radios, satelite radios, maps, clothing, tv's, refridgerators, etc, etc, are portable, and above all else, personal.
your truck is NOT a legal residence. you do not recieve mail (snail mail) there. you do not get electricity from the electric company, you do not (in most instances) have running water, bathroom, etc, etc.
your home dwelling, be it an apartment, home, condo, whatever, you can then have insurance to cover your personal belongings, but then too, only a percentage of the value, and with the cost of new being cheaper, just go out and buy from the wallet, rather than wait god knows how long for any settlement that WILL be lower than the actual cash value of the property. its also called "de-valuation" or "depreciation"..........you lose even if you were ablle to get insurance for your personal belongings while on the road........which you simply cannot get...
