Default Teams

I have a question for the team drivers out there (or any solo's who want to answer)...
My husband and I are new to team driving.. he's been a solo driver for years, and I'm a recent driving school grad.
I was wondering how you run? do you switch off after 12 hrs, or split the log.. one drive 5 hrs, sleep 8 hrs, drive 6 hrs, sleep 2 hrs.. etc....? Or do you just switch whenever you get tired and run on each other's log?

Thanks
Necie

I have not run sleeper team for over 18 years. Back then the speed limits were 55 mph and you would not run over 65 mph unless you didn't mind getting a bunch of speeding tickets. So today with bigger horsepower you could average more miles per hour. I always used to run 5 on and 5 off. But you can't even do that now either. I just could not drive more than 250 miles knowing that I had somebody else that could take over. Seems like I used to like to stop for an hour break every 5 hours. I think you have to run and sleep the way that you are more comfortable with. I include a link to a former husband and wife that explains a little bit about how they operated from an owner-operators point of view.

Since the HOS changed the split sleeper berth provision was altered. You can only use the split sleeper berth by showing 8 hrs in the sleeper and then matching it with 2 additional hrs later. Unfortunately when you use this you never reset your 14 hr hr clock completely and doesnt seem to be a practical way for a team to operate. Under the current regs the best solution is to drive 10 straight then switch out. Changing the split sleeper berth was truly shortsighted on the DOT's part especially in regards to team operations. I have heard of some team operations that use loose leaf logbooks and simply drive 5 on 5 off and sending in "adjusted logs" to the company.

Here are some links for you to read that cover hours for team drivers. Basically you must have eight consecutive hours in the hours in the bunk and the other two may be off duty, bunk, or a combination of the two. There is no more splitting the hours between the bunk and driving.

"HOS RC FAQs - J.J. Keller & Associates, Inc."

http://www.jjkeller.com/informationc...s_Aug_2005.pdf

FMCSA - Regulation: 395.8

If you run Canada you must be complaint with their rules when you enter and then compliant with the US rules when you re-enter. Neither county cares abut the others rules.

There is a few other catches in the rules but I can't find my references to them right now. When I do I will post them.

You said the your are a recent grad. Might want to re-review the information on teams hours they should have given you. My guess is that you are getting confused by listening to your spouse and what you learned.

Don't even think of running on the others log. All it takes is one minor mistake and you have a serious HOS violation. Run legal and safe. I have been pulled over for headlight out at 10 AM (light rain) and one tail light out (2 AM) both with a log book check.

Also be aware that there is a court ruling that the 34 hour reset and the eleven hours driving MAY change on Sept. 14 if the appeal is denied. It will go back to ten hours driving, no reset and 60 hours/7 days or 70 hours/8 days.
Appeals Court tosses DOT’s 11-hour rule and 34-hour restart - T_news2197 - News - J. J. Keller & Associates, Inc.

Good luck on your new career.

I'd like to thank everyone for their responses... In school, the main focus was log book rules for solo's... which is why I wanted to know how other teams did their logs... I appreciate the links and info I have recieved here.

Oleblue also has a wealth of information on there HOS page. The first link "2005 Hours of Service..." will probably answer all your questions.
