Default Fedex Express drivers

Hi,

I work for fedex express as a DOT Handler. I have until July of 08 before I can even apply for a RTD position (our tractor trailer guys).

I like the idea of working for fedex express because of the benefits.

I was wondering what the people in the trucking industry think of fedex express(not to be confused with fedex freight).

Basically, I'm trying to gauge whether or not I should stick it out in my current position until I can apply for RTD or try driving trucks for another company.

many, many years ago i applied to FedEx. i had (then) over 10 years driving experience. they wouldn't hire me as a driver, i would have had to work inside, handling packages. i told the human resource "person" she was insane........

she went on to say that they "promote from with-in" and if need be, they will pay for an employee to learn how to drive a truck.

i told her again, she was "insane"

here i was, with 10 years experience, and they wanted me to lower my pay, standards, education, experience, and work as a package handler...??

needless to say, i told her to shove her job, and the whole FedEx experience up her @ss, and i didn't hold back in saying that either..........

how they can NOT hire someone with positive, verifiable experience is beyond me..........

so my advice to you is, stick with them knuckleheads, and maybe someday, they will deny some other experienced driver a job, so that they can train you instead.....

you got it lucky (for now).........

lol, That's part of there "People Service Profit" philosophy.

They try to promote from within whenever possible. Right now a lot of people in the company want to be a RTD so they probably won't hire outside for a long time.

It's a lot of competition, and I'm worried I won't be able to work at the ramp closest to me, unless I wait 5 years.

Edit: Some people seem to think that driving trucks is the lazy mans job, or the easy way out. What do you guys do when you hear people say this?

I tell them "Thats what I say every time I lock up a set, because a car cut me off and I
have about 40 tons of steel sliding down the highway in two different directions while I pray I find a place I can put it, where no kids will die and I'll make it home!!!"

I think all ltl is pritty much this way, at Roadway if a Road position becomes available, they offer it to the City people before some outsider is considered. Even in the City once your hired you will have to work dock for a couple of years before you have enough whiskers to bid a p&d or hostler position. Mustache Retired Roadway

Wow, good answer.

I've always had the attitude towards them to try and imagine life without truckers.
