If the Fifth Wheel does not physically pick up the trailer when you back under it DO NOT HOOK IT Get out and lower the trailer. But still Check the Jaws after hooking especially in the WINTER time That stuff can get frozen and not work smoothly.

I know at least one of those times, that was the case... and I knew it. I saw that the trailer was raised a little high, but I hooked anyways..... NEVER hook to a trailer that doesn't pick up when you go underneath NEVER NEVER NEVER. You might be fine doing it 99 times out of a hundred, but it only takes once to lose your job.... or someone elses life.

The school i attend in baltimore, emphasizes it alot and even made their own dvd about it. I got a copy and watch it on a regular basis, it helps reinforce the 9 page handout they gave us on pretrip.

You have describe each item. You can only point to the component. Example you can not go under the truck to check slack adjusters. You have to say where they are and point to the area they are located. I have 2 state licensed examiners at my school and they warn
not to go under the truck or trailer. Most everything has to be talked out except the brake checks. You have to do the "Tug" and Pump Down...ect.
