Default Illinois House fails to override uniform speed veto

Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007 – Supporters of uniform speed limits on Illinois highways once again are feeling the sting of Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s influence. An effort to bring an end to split speed limits in Illinois was defeated this afternoon after the governor launched a late full-court press to quash the effort.
The Illinois House voted against overriding Blagojevich’s veto of a bill that sought to eliminate the provision in state law that set up slower speed limits on rural interstates for vehicles weighing more than 8,000 pounds. Currently, those vehicles are required to travel 10 mph below the 65 mph speed limit for other vehicles.

i swear its more dangerous to us truckers with the speed limit 55 mph and the cars 65 mph. they are going a lot faster and than us and since we are going a lot slower they cut us off and perform dangerous moves around us. now to all the truckers driving through Illinois you can go ten over the limit thats it or else they will pull you over

Its all about the revenue that traffic tickets produce. This is something that the states find hard to give up.

Well to be honest I don't think that it's that big of an issue. Yes I agree that the split speed is hazardous to the motoring public. All you have to do is look at how bad it was i Michigan a couple of years ago before they raised the speed for trucks up there. Trucks 55 and Cars 70. I saw a lot of bad underride accidents up there because the cars were driving 15 mph faster than the trucks. But I 'm not really sure everyone realizes that in Illinois the 55 for trucks is very loosely enforced. I have several friends in law enforcement in Illinois and they all tell me that they will basically allow up to 10 mph over the posted limit as long as you are not being a nuisance. When I'm driving in Illinois I set the cruise at 61 mph and let the big dog eat and haven't had any trouble yet.I think that Illinois Law enforcement knows the dangers involved with the split speed limit and have been trying to get it changed just like the rest of us.
